Couple of engine questions

Does anyone know if there are any problems with the 347 stroker? I have heard about some oiling problems. We would really like to go with that engine, but it there are any problems with durability, we will just go with the 302.

Also does anyone use the X cam from ford? How is the streetability?

Has anyone had a cam custom ground for them?

Thanks

Glenn Jr

Glenn - I have the ford X cam in my 408W stroker. Have no problems with streetability, measured 15" of vacuum at idle. Pulls well at all rev points even from tickover. love it. Consider I could have gone a little more radical still, but am stuck at 9.5:1 CR, which may not work well with a more radical cam.
Only thing I have to watch is she doesn't like the secondaries opening up much below 3000rpm. Since it takes off like a scalded cat from that point, guess I'll live with it.

Do a little more research on this. Was reading one of the stroker writeups where the 347 is not so hot for longevety on a street motor. 331 is about the limit. Why not do a 351 stroker instead? The 393 stroker kit works fairly well. The Comp Cams 351 retrofit roller has nearly identical specs as the 303X FMS cam, but is ground on a small base circle for non-roller 351 blocks. Unstroked 351 with this cam has (as Wilf pointed out) 15" - 16" vacuum at idle, decent street manners, pulls like a diesel from about 1500 RPM, and a scalded cat from 3000.

Call Coast High performance. They have the street fighter 347 stroker which has addressed the oil consumption problem and other problems. Apparently there was a writeup in muscle mag or something some time ago describing an engine build that works pretty well. Coasthigh has a custom cam they make for this setup. My engine guy is building this setup for me.

Hydrolic roller cam, roller rockers, victor jr heads, victor jr intake manifold, 75mm TB, 80mm mass air, 30 lb injectors. They say it should do about 430 to 450hp. We will see.
