HELP! Flywheel Casting Number

Well, I'm putting a rebuilt 289 back in the car today, and naturally the technical questions arise on a Sunday.

I have 2 flywheels in the garage. Part number is C5AE-6380-E. Are there any opinions as to whether this is the 28 as opposed to 50 oz?

The reason I ask. The old motor had some end float on the crank, and it's just occurred to me that I should double check the applicability of the flywheel. We haven't taken it apart to diagnose yet. There hadn't been a noticeable vibration, but the car had started to burn oil at high rpm's, so I hauled it out and had a replacement rebuilt.

It make sense to me that the 1965 casting number would be 28oz; however, one of the flywheels had been purchased with a bell that came off an early 1970's 351.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks...Denis

I don't find that number listed in the reference book I have at hand, but I agree with your presumption that anything prior to 1985, when the 5.0-era engine was revised to 50 oz, should be compatible with your early engine. An early 1970s 351 flywheel should have the same 28.2 oz imbalance factor as well.

C5Ae = 1965 SB flywheel, standard balance

Thanks lads for the response. This has confirmed what I had suspected, but it's comfortable to have the outside opinions. Driving this car is more fun that pulling motors in and out.
