I give up! Question on Hydralic Throw out Bearing
O.K., I have given up on trying to make my clutch arm engage my throw out bearing before hitting the outer edge of the presure plate. SOOOOOOOOOOOO, I have decided to go with a hydralic throw out bearing and was wondering what one would be the best. I am using a 351 W. with a lakewood bell housing, a Tremac 3550 trany a Ram flywheel, clutch plate and presure plate and a Tilton clutch set up. Any suggestions?

I have a 351W, a toploader, a Lakewood bellhousing, a Ford flywheel and clutch assembly and I used a Tilton throw out bearing. Follow the directions and it will work perfectly.

I use the Tilton TOB too and would recommend it. It works very well and is standard on all the jbl's. The only trouble I had with it was caused by me and not the unit :D
Here is the pdf catalog page from Tilton http://www.tiltonracing.com/pdf_files/PG-7-8.pdf here is a picture of it. You need two parts...the black collar that attaches to the transmission and has a threaded neck. Different model transmissions require different collars. The TOB then threads onto this. By rotating the bearing unit, you can adjust the distance to the clutch plate fingers. http://www.cobralads.com/clutch/DSC00048.JPG hope this info helps Andy |
I also us a similar setup, 351W, Lakewood bell housing, Hayes clutch and Tilton hydrolic throwout bearing. Follow the Tilton setup instructions to the letter and you will have no problems.

Adjustment Needed?
I had a conversation the other day with a technical rep from Centerforce (I had a questions about their Dual Friction set). He told me that hydraulic throwout bearings require manual adjustments as the clutch wears. This seemed a little odd to me, especially since such an adjustment would mean major work (I assume pulling the tranny).
Does his statement make sense, or do hydraulic throws need just the initial setup? |
Throw out adjustment life
Redd,
For a single plate clutch the initial adjustment if done correctly will last the life of the clutch plate. With multiple plates interum adjustments will depend on the number of plates used. The initial adjustment allows for 1/10 of an inch wear of the clutch plate which would be the wear thickness of a single clutch plate. Regards, Bryan |
I am also using a 351W, lakewood, Centerforce flywheel and clutch, Tremec 3550 and Tilton bearing. The car has been on the road since last June and I have put alot of miles on it and alot of demand on the clutch. I am very pleased with the performance of the whole setup.
As with any hydraulic bearing you have to set it up properly with the correct spacing. Make sure your lines are clear of the clutch and make sure you have a pedal stop as to not overstroke the bearing. Roscoe |
THANKS TO ALL. THIS IS A GREAT HELP!!! ANYONE KNOW THE CHEAPEST PLACE TO GET ONE OF THE TILTONS?

dlowe,
I don't recall what I paid but shop around a few places. I got mine from a place in Texas. http://www.taylor-race.com/index.htm Let me know if you need help with the install. By the way, Tilton has a great customer service. Call Larry Grant at (805) 688-2353 Roscoe |
TOB
Re-read three times about not overstroking the TOB.. Measure the stoke and DO USE A PEDAL STOP. I read where some people say thay don't have one and it works perfectly.. They are just fortunate that their MC is a small bore and cant overstoke the TOB.

I too have the Tilton setup on a toploader that I have never used. Looks to be a good setup and very good advice about overstroaking these units too. Be forwarned though that they have a maximum pressure that can be used on a Pressure plate. They will blow a seal if the pressure plate is springed too heavy. Thats why the centerforce combo works so well.
