Header Gasket Placement
I picked up some Mr. Gasket header gaskets. does the printed side go to the engine or the headers?

Used copper exhaust gaskets (pretty sure they were Mr. Gasket). Raised side toward head so it would compress when snugged down. Also used hi temp copper RTV on both sides. So far (4,000 miles), no leaks. Also used copper RTV on j-pipe (header - collecter) gasket which is more leak prone, and it seals well also.

If using the copper gaskets, you might want to think about putting 'em on with the raised side toward the header rather then the head. That way the bump will conform to any irregularity or uneveness in the header flange.
Although, Jack21- it seems to have worked well for you doing the opposite, so who knows? I guess I'll have to try some of the copper RTV on the side pipe/header slip-fit joint. Everything else I've used blows out within a couple of weeks. |
What if I am using the standard Ultra Seals? Should I can them now? Also, should I use RTV if I stay with them?

A case could be made for either side the embossed area on a copper gasket faces. Look at how it interfaces both ways, aand do it the way it makes the most sense. Do use the copper RTV, though. Just a small bead. Stuff works better than I expected.
The gaskets aren't wildly expensive. If you use the ones you have, and they leak, how much of a hassle is it to replace them? Gaskets leak or blow out when not properly supported, or squeezed all the way around. If your header flange is flat, beefy, and no irregularities around the mating surface, it may work fine with any gasket, or no gasket - just the RTV. SBF's have one bolt on either side of each exhaust port. Loosen one bolt, and you know where the gasket will leak, and eventually blow out. |
