Electric Pusher Radiator Fans
I am going to have to add 1 or 2 pusher fans to cool my Cobra. It looks like the puller fan (Perma-Cool 16" that is supposed to move 2950 CFM) I installed is not going to be enough. What is the best fans that moves the most air? I have a 30 amp relay installed because I thought I would need more fan. Any recommendations? Thanks, David.

I have the 2 original pusher fans along with a puller fan behind it.
Here's the deal...The car runs cooler with just the puller fan!! When I run the 2 pushers with the puller the car runs hotter!! Why? Because the pushers disrupt the flow to the puller and make it less effective. The fix!! More timing? better gas?? |
What are you running for a rad and a thermostat?
I have a 4 core brass and a 180 degree T/S hopefully I dont have problems when it get flashed up....bought a 16 inch puller which has yet to arrive....... When are you hot sitting at a standstill or general driving? Do you have the thermostat switch with the fan that is acjustable? If so what is Setpoint? Also make sure you are getting enought volts for RPM so you do get CFM Tim |
Assuming your overheating is limited to under 15 mph...
I was going to claim that your engine wasn't quite right when I saw that you're running a C6. :CRY: What are using for a trans oil cooler? Are you using a vacuum advance distributor? |
Looks like I should give more info. I have not driven car yet, so I don't know about cooling while driving. The 11:1 compression engine is not broken in yet, so that should help. I am using the low mount cooler in front of the radiator that most use for an oil cooler to cool my trans. Radiator is Griffin with double 1.25" tubes as large as I can fit in car. 180 thermostat. I may be hasty in my fan decision. Fan is 16" Perma-Cool High Performance Line. Do I have enough fan? I put the shop fan in front and that helped a bunch. Any ideas? Later, David.

Proper shrouding of the fan and radiator will do much more to help you with hot engines than any additional fans can do. As stated earlier, pushers and pullers do not work well together. Pullers are more effective.

Some info on my cooling system
My West Coast cobra has a vertical radiator, it therefore will cool better than one set at an angle...having gotten past that, however, my car will have a 7 row heavy duty radiator, and the puller fan....only
This, according to Vern Redel, is plenty of cooling for my 514 SVO....if I need more, during desert heat, I will add Red Line Water Wetter, which will certainly drop the temp. Pusher fans will disrupt the air flow, as stated in the earlier posts. Certainly try the water wetter before you spend any money and make any other mods. Your next move should be an OIL cooler, IF you still experience overheating....set it in the lower front intake, below the radiator...I promise you your temps will drop ! Use 1/2 mininum internal hosing for the oil lines. |
David, I would say the fan is the problem. I have checked the perma cool fans and they usually put out about 1/2 of what they state. I use the Griffin 2 row rad with a 16" Spal puller. The Spal fan is the best I have ever found and will move twice the air of any other. It will cool up to about 450hp. If you have more hp than that they make a dual 11" fan which should cool just about anything. I have a friend locally that has a pro-street Cuda with an 800hp blower engine and we used the dual 11" and Griffin and he has no problems cooling. I've been using the Spal fans for many years and they work great. You will need to use your 30amp relay circuit because they can draw as much as 22 amps. If you are interested I can give you the name and number of where to buy one.

We use the Spall that Don is talking about in all our V-10's. No problems. I have to block off the oil cooler as the oil has never gone over 140 even on the track. Our exhaust temps at the header flange is (normally) 1125/50, rarely engine temp ever goes over 190, even on hot days and at the track.
Spall will do the job fellas. (Stay away from those pusher/puller fan combo's!) DV |
I built a fan shroud and installed it today. Without testing, I don't know the outcome, but I would like to know where to buy Spal fans. What part numbers? As far as horsepower goes, 375hp?, I am not sure what output is, if anyone is interested in engine specs, look in Texas Cobra Club forum under "Cobra Build Progress". Thanks, David Shelton.

The fan shroud seems to have made a big difference. Temp does not get above 205 degrees in shop. Will have to wait and see when I finally finish and drive cobra. Thanks a bunch. Later, David Shelton.
