Niles, Big consideration is your desire with respect to your desire for authenticity.
With that extent determined choose FIA or 427 style.
Then if that isn't a big deal, you have all the varieties of ripper mustang stuff. B&M Hurst etc
I bought the 427 raked forward style. Of course it has to be put together in terms of purchases
-Shifter handle
-Boot
-Bezel
-Shift knob
....get the drift?

Ripper's etc are fairly complete, but not cheap either

As for replica shifter there are varying degrees of quality and feel.

Niles,

What don't you like about the stock shifter? How do you plan to drive the car? Aftermarket shifters will accelerate the wear on the syncros due to the quicker shifting action that they all offer. But most offer externally adjustable hard stops, which keep you from over-extending the shift forks. Personally, I added a Pro 5.0 shifter to my tremec (3550) but I haven't driven it yet :). I have a stock T5 shifter handle mounted to it and it fits my car perfectly. I like the idea of the hard stops and am also used to a short throw shifter. But if I hadn't come across such a good deal on the shifter, I would have been quite happy with the stock TKO shifter on my 3550 (the TKO is the same as the regular 3550 shifter but with about a 30% shorter throw). I have driven a mustang with this setup and it was very nice. Plus, I don't plan on powershifting my car, but rather shifting with my wrist, hence the stock shifter would have been a-ok ;).

To answer your other question, there are several aftermarket shifters on the market. Do a search over on the corral.net and you'll find the most popular shifters are the Pro 5.0 and I believe the Steeda Tri-Ax.

Hybrid?

Isn't there a way to mate the shifter mechanism of a Pro 5.0 shifter with the authentic original style upper shifter handle and have the best of both worlds? I thought I had seen this done before.

Hurst makes a shifter for the Tremec and the shift handle bolts right up to it.

Part # from summit....HUU-3915070 $175.95

I just installed it and it's a beautiful thing!

Yup, the shifter handle just bolts right to the top of the shifter with two bolts.

I thought one of the advantages/upgrades of the TKO was that it had a short throw shifter ???

Nope, same rubber one you get in a GT Mustang.

Mike Braddock 04-05-2002 09:35 PM

The TKO does have a short throw shifter. It's about 30% shorter than the standard tremec 3550.

Then the standard one must really SUCK!!!!

The original tremec shifters work fine but the TKO does come with a shorter throw shifter than the regular 3550. As for aftermarket shifters all of them are 2 piece, the shift mecanism and the stick. You can remove and interchange shifter handles between any T-5 or Tremec 3550/TKO.
It was mentioned that the PRO 5.0 shifter came with positive stops. They are useless. I contacted TTC, the US distributor for Tremec transmissions and they said that the 3550/TKO have internal stops and to run the stops on the aftermarket shifter back away from the stick. They also said that installing an aftermarket shifter would void the warranty. After we determand that my transmission was no longer under warranty they said that most people from what they could tell were using the PRO 5.0 shifter but they would not endorse it.
After I got use to the new shifter I really like the way it performs. As for accelerated wear on my syncronizers, well that's why there brass so they will wear and not the steel gears.
DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!
It's a lot more fun that way.

TKO Shifter

We had some very short shifters made for the Robnell cars, and they work great in most other replicas. If you want pics just email me at the office. Bolt direct to the Tremec, and sit right above the boot.
