Toploader Question

If a toploader is overfilled will it blow gear lube out vent on top of the case ?

Cobra20646 04-14-2002 07:55 PM

The only way you could posssibly over fill it would be to remove the top, fill the case and then replace the top.
Since most of us install the transmission dry, and fill it up using the "fill" orifice, it becomes almost impossible to over fill it.
If you can follow me here, the fill hole is located on the right hand side of the case. It has a plug with a square head that you unscrew and remove. Fill it till it starts to run out of the hole and then replace the plug. If you think it overfilled, remove the plug, let the excess drain out, and then replace the plug.

I know where the fill and drain plugs are.. I've changed my gear lube before. The reason I ask the question is that my car was just in the shop and it was jacked way up in the front and I think the gear lube was changed with the nose way up. I'm thinking that with the car in that position my guy may have drained it
and it all didn't come out and then he added 2 quarts. With the nose high I'm questioning whether it could have been overfilled and thats why it's blowing gear lube out the breather. I just was wondering if that was the reason or the damn thing has something else going on.

Denny,

Under those circumstances, I could understand how it might be overfilled. What I don't know is how overfilled it has to be in order to cause the symptoms you are describing.

The only way to address this, in my opinion, is to evenly raise the car and remove the fill plug and see for yourself if it is infact overfilled. You'll know right away....

Good luck

No.

Enless they turned it on it's side and filled it completely it should not blow out the top.

I am beginning to think your car is haunted though..

I leveled the car and checked the gear oil. Right up to the bottom of the plug now since it blew out quite a bit. Now it's at the right level and it's still blowing gear oil although nearly not as much...

Denny, just a WAG...is it "blowing" lube or "slinging" the stuff? Seems when I put mine together there was a gasket between the top cover and the top plate. That gasket has a vent hole (1/16" mas y menos), but I was told it does not line up with the vent hole so air goes in & out but oil doesn't get thrown out through the top cover hole. Do you have the gasket installed? If not, maybe it is getting "slung" out as the tranny is turning...? David Kee, where are you? LOL
