No Scoop Hoods - Engine Limitations & Cooling Problems
I'd like to know what will fit under the NON-SCOOPED street style hood of a Superformance or ERA 427.
What are the limitations regarding induction and air cleaners? Does the hood scoop promote engine bay cooling-are street hood equipped cars prone to running hotter? Stan **) **) **) **) |
Stan, I ran my car for about 10 years without a hood scoop. It's a small block with a Griffin radiator. It tended to run pretty hot in traffic. I believe that this is largely due to the intake sucking in hot air rising from the headers. I did leave a large gap above the radiator for cool air to enter the engine compartment while the car was mooving. I run an 18 inch fan from a Caprice police car and that always kept things under control (230 degrees). I did notice after I installed the hood scoop that the engine runs cooler all the time. I did make an aluminum sheet metal air deflector which attches under the hood and extends down in front of the 14" round air filter to keep hot air from the radiator out and fresh air from the hood scoop is directed in. I hope this helps.

How did you attach the deflector?
Rally Snake...since it's aluminum, how did you attach it without screws? Or did you do this (fiberglass it in) before a repaint?
