Shelby Aluminum 427
I want to build an Shelby 427 aluminum engine. Do I stay with all Shelby components or non-Shelby heads, manifold etc.?

I want a street car, 500 to 600 hp. I will put it in a 2002 SPF.

25 large is the number I came up with also.
VERY trick engine, but my new 514 stroker is 600 HP out of the box. If you want the retro look (I like it outside the car, not inside), and want mucho HP, for not much wgt., Aluminum! The Shelby heads are supposed to be nice. Great Asp :MECOOL: |
What about the Genesis block---it's supposed to be very close now, and much better priced. Shelby gets 5k for a bare block that still requires machine work...seems kinda pricey (imagine that!).

FWIW, Bill Parham at Southern Automotive has also built up some of the Shelby aluminum 427 blocks. I understand that he did some of the original "testing" on the preliminary blocks for 'Hisownself. He can probably give you some useful information also.

My brother and I built one last year using ALL Shelby parts available. Mike LeFevres at Shelby was very good at answering questions. (at least once a week) We are very pleased with the motor now and have LOTS of pictures of the parts and build-up. If you do it yourself, you can save about 4 grand. Or, you can have Mike build it for you and save a lot of time. He is THE expert on THAT block. I'd be happy to send pics or answer any questions you have. Regards, John |

Hi 1 cobra nut. It did not cost me 25k or 20k or 15k to build my motor. I have an all alum shelby block and heads motor, It was done for 13500.00$ The short block was assemblied my my machinist. The heads were CC my mike lefevers of shelby. The block can be built to 550 cubes with bore and stroke. I have been told that the Edelbrock heads are better. If you look around and know what you want in your motor you can save about 30% of the cost. My crank is a 428 10/10 crank, got it from FFP for 450.00 The intake came from dove. rods are eagle. the pistons are arias. the cam is comp cams. The fuel injection was 3800.00$ Speed Pro brain, accell throttle body, 55lbs injectors, MSD ignition. The machine work was blueprinted to specs. 2400.00$ A carb motor is cheaper than mine. The supercharger is not hooked up yet, the belt keeps ripping off. It is hard to get the alignment correct. Next year I will go with a steel crank. They cost about 2200.00$ The boost is going up also. If I can help you with parts places let me know. I talked to Mr. Parham today about options for my dad's 427. First of all, Bill is a straight shooter, he took about twenty minutes on the phone to educate me on the history of the 427, and common myths and also facts about FE's. I believe Bill charges a fair amount for his products, but he backs them up, and makes sure that they are running right, if not, he will fix it. My dad and I debated for a while whether or not to go with the Aluminum or Iron, we decided to go with the Iron as the benefits did not outweigh the $4000 difference. Our motor will still be pretty light though. He gave us an estimate of 490 pounds for an iron block, with aluminum heads, intake, water pump, pulleys, and flywheel. It will be a screamer regardless.
