Superformance Brake Disk Sizes?????
Does anyone know the standard brake sizes on Superformance 427's. Their website shows pictures but does not give dimensions. It looks as though they use Wilwood Superlite IIA's for calipers, but I am not sure.

I do know that if you install the Wilwood upgrade brake kit, the rotors are 12.75" The rear rotors need to get approx. 0.110" cut off the OD so they won't rub on the calipers. Don't confuse this with the new factory installed wilwoods which have smaller calipers and the same (ford) rotors as before. I don't know their size offhand but it's about 11"

I was curious what was available from the factory. I see in their photos they have willwoods front and rear. So you are saying that you can get 11" stock in the front and 12.75" as an option?

YES they come stock with 11" (I think) brakes with willwood calipers. As an upgrade you can get 12.75" rotors and different willwood calipers. The upgrade brakes have a three piece hub / hat / rotor assembly, the rotors are 1.25" thick up front (about) 7/8" out back.

Contact the parts dept at a SPF dealer. They have used more than one rotor with the Wilwoods. Some are Ford rotors, some are chevy parts. Let em know what series car you are working on, they KNOW the answer for real.

SPF's have always had the same rotor up front, they simply changed the caliper and caliper braket to allow the use of willwood components instead of ford calipers. I believe that this rotor is 11" but not having one in front of me to measure I cannot say for sure. I've never had to buy any of them either, as brand new left-overs from upgrades are piled up high in the parts room of the shop.The willwood upgrade is not installed at the factory but rather at the local dealer. this is where you get the 12.75" x 1.25" rotors, with alum hat and hub. The calipers are quite different in size too. They are black alum, and say willwood on them but that's where the similarity ends. The rear rotor are the factore ford thunderbird SC brakes circa 1993. Now they too have willwood calipers, but not the big ones. Also, a separate E-brake spot caliper that's nearly useless. Most people honestly will be more than fine with the factory setup, but there's always room to improve for track use.

Fixit is correct..
Standard rotor is a basic 11" Ford component.
The up graded rotors (and very cool powder coated Wilwoods) need to have 1/8" turned off them to prevent them from rubbing the inside of the Wilwoods calipers. The up graded calipers also have nifty anti rattle clips on them too. Just helped perform this change on a SPF car. Eric |
The new SPF calipers are Wilwood Dynalights, not Superlights. I'm not sure what the factory uses for rotor size, but the upgrade kit from Dynamic in Ohio uses a 12.25 rotor that is cut down to 12 inches. Anything bigger will not fit under 15 inch wheels.

Thanks for the info. Maybe the upgraded front end with upgraded Willwood calipers uses Superlite IIA's in place of the Dynalites. That would make a logical upgrade.

I did not see the dimension on the rotor you showed. Mike is correct that the final dimension on the "cut down" rotor is 12". We got a pair of 12.125" rotors, and had them turned to 12". They just barely did not work at 12.125". Eric :cool: |
My factory new SPF has the factory Wilwoods and DOES NOT have FORD rotors up front. I replaced them. I know. I can tell you what chey products mine are off of, but it doesn't matter because not everyones is the same.
Like I said, call the SPF dealer. He is the REAL expert here. Quote:

Most cars that get the willwood upgrade have 17" wheels. You have to grind down some of the housing on the spot calipers to clear 15" wheels. I can't for sure say the exact size, or how much you need to turn off the rear rotors.

Bob has the last word. When upgrading, replacing, or repairing brakes on you # SPF, call the dealer for sure.
I was responding (for the most part) to the original request for "standard" brake size. 17" wheels huh?, I have not worked on a SPF yet with those wheels. It would figure you could get a bigger rotor inside those. Eric |
SPF 952 (built early Spring 2001) has 12" on the front and 10.5" on the back. The dealer and I measured them ourselves. Wilwood equipped, BTW.
