Fuel filler tube question

I just finished installing the fuel filler tube and gas cap. What is the small tube just below the top of the tube (see picture). It is open to the atmosphere. Should this be capped off? Does it get connected somewhere?

That's an air vent, and should get connected to the fuel tank vent with a length of fuel line.
As you fill the tank with fuel, air is displaced, and should be vented through that pipe. |

Fuel tank vent outlet should be somewhere on top of tank. Should be 1/2" or 3/8". Take a droplight and look around for it. If you don't find it, or don't hook it up, car will stink of fuel, particularly when fueling, and the liquid fuel is displacing fuel vapors. Most gas pumps now have secondary vapor recovery that remove the fuel vapors as you're fueling. The vapors come out that little pipe, and should be connected to the tank. Also, there should be a one way check valve on the tank to allow air in as fuel is used.
Check with EM to find out where this is on your tank. I like your ground wire on the fuel filler. Actually, you ground yourself when you first grab the gas handle. There's a metal wire inside the hose that completes the connection to ground. If the hose is damaged, and you can see a wire sticking out, use another dispenser. |
A full or nearly full tank's contents will expand when parked in the hot sun. It has to go somewhere and you don't want it coming out the filler cap and ruining your paint. Put a "t" in the line from the tank to the filler neck at the neck, loop it, and vent to the ground.

Further down the line...
I need to run a hose from the filler cap to the tank. It is 2" dia. What is everyone using, and where can I get some of this hose?:confused:

Got a 1 1/2' piece of it with gas cap. But any auto supply store should be able to get fuel tank flexible hose.
Installed it with two short sections, and a piece of exhaust tubing with an S bend for a more durable fuel filler line. Did you find the fuel tank vent outlet yet? |
If the fuel tank vent hose is not connected, ut us very difficult to fill the car up with gas because it will bubble back up wih the escaping air. That is if the tank has no vent, or it is capped off. If it is left open, gas will spill out and dirt and water can get inm, assuming it has a ffitting for the vent tube, of course.

I got a 2 foot long piece of large diameter fuel line from the local NAPA store for about $23 a foot. It is kind of rigid, but I was able to get it in. By the way I ran fuel tank vent lines and even siliconed all the connections in the tank after they were made besides the gaskets and my trunk still smeels alittle like gas. Jim |
