8.8 axle replacements
Greetings all... been a long time since old mojo was here. Ok, here's the problem... my 1987 8.8 rear has the funky 4.25 five lug spacing and I have my heart set on a set of Torq Thrust D wheels that only come in 4.5 spacing. What copperhead infested wreck should the Phantom of the Salvage Yard be looking for to replace those axles?? I found a couple of threads on another site that conflicted... drivers side this... pass. side that... no cut this or shorten that... HELP!! Here's the tag numbers if that will help...

Thinking you could take your existing axles into a machine shop, have the existing studs removed, drill the axle flanges for standard Ford studs (not metric) on a standard Ford bolt pattern. Then your TTD's should bolt right on. And you should be able to do that to the front rotors as well.

That's what I did. I had a machine shop redrill the holes in the flange. Actually, I think I still have those axles in the garage. I ended up buying a set of Mosier axles instead. They cost about $150 for the pair and were 31 spline instead of the stock ford 28 spline. Of course you'd then need a new diff., but it's something to think about.

Are all the stock 8.8 rears 28 spline? Do the numbers on the tag tell the gears and spline?

All Mustang 8.8s have 28 splines stock (not counting a real Cobra R). The 93/95 F-150 Lightning, as well as some other F-150s, the V-8 Explorer, and the Expedition come with factory 31 spline axles.
