Rear Pin Drive Spindle Nut

I am trying to remove the spindle nut. I have a Jag rear and the univesals are bad. I have pin drive spindles. I have removed the cotter pin but cannot break loose the spindle nut.

How do you break the spindle nuts loose?

A large air wrench. The tightening torque of the axle nut is 140 lbft, so it will probably take more than that to loosen it.

Thanks for the reply.

Without air tools or a compressor, what else are my options? Can the universals be replaced without taking apart the spindle?

I don't think it's possible to change the u-joint in situ.

While the car is on the ground, remove the wing nut. Then use a long breaker bar to remove the nut. Orient the breaker so that you're pushing toward the ground, not pulling up. That's to add traction to that wheel, rather than reducing it.

Thanks for the info. I did remove it with the aid of a mechanic with an air impact wrench. Now the question is: The mechanic seems to feel that if it torqued to 140lbs, it will crush the bearings. I did not see it apart. What stops it from being crushed, as he feels?

Your mechanic has apparantly never worked on Jag hubs. See these hints
