master cylinder choice
It's time for deciding what master cylinder to use with Corvette suspension and brakes. Is it necessary to use power setup or will manual do without having to push on pedal with both feet to get car to stop. Would like to use manual cylinder if pedal pressure won't be excessive. I also like cleaner look of manual cylinder.

When It was time for manual master cylinders for my car, I didn't want power brakes either. I called Wilwood. They asked what brakes front and rear, a few details about my car, and made a recomendation - works perfectly. But it is their job. I always get info from tech depts. They certainly don't want to suggest something that doesn't work and mar their reputations. This works with just about any aftermarket part company. It is their business to know. I bought a seven year old E-M Cobra earlier this year. Early on I noticed the Tilton hydraulic clutch master cylinder was leaking and replaced it. When I disassembled the old unit, I discovered the aluminum cylinder was very worn from the in/out action of the actuating rod. About a month later, the Tilton brake pedal began to drop when holding pressure and I knew the brake master cylinders were going too. I came to believe that aluminum master cylinders designed for race applications wear out faster than steel cylinders, so I went looking for a suitable substitute. I ended up buying and installing steel master cylinders from CNC. So far, so good. You can see them at: http://www.pitstopusa.com/CNCSTEELMASTERCYLINDERS.asp
Incidentally, my car has 1987 Corvette suspension and brakes. I used 5/8" bore master cylinders. |

Another view: We've been using Tilton masters for over 10 years, and replaced maybe two under warrantee. That's pretty amazing considering that the cars tend to be unused a significant percentage of their life.
