351W Exhaust Header Bolts
I have a 351W crate. Iwould like to replace the exhaust header bolts with new stainless bolts from ARP. According to Summit and ARP the engine needs 0.75 inch bolts 3/8 of an inch in diameter. They recommended kit 400-1102 (Chevy 396 and 454). Does anyone see a problem with these bolts?
Do the bolts on a 351W make it to the water jacket? Do I need to put sealer on the bolts before installing? What is the torque recommended? Thanks, Bob |
Yes, those are the bolts to use. Thgey have two different head diameters though. You just need 3/8" - .750" header bolts. No sealer is required, blind holes.

I'd also suggest some anti-seize on each bolt thread, especially if you have aluminum heads. h dog |
Antiseize is not bad, but in my experience, header bolts like to loosen themselves while driving, especially on new headers. That's why mine are drilled for safety wire. The safety wire not only prevents exhaust leaks, but looks full-race as well.

Tightening header bolts can be an art in-itself. First of all the gaskets tend to compress over time because of the all the extreme hot/cold cycles requiring retightening at least two to three times. Then if the header flange is not exactly straight, you have to torque the $hit out of the bolts to pull it down. All this in conjunction with little tiny soft aluminum threads in the head can spell big trouble.
This is a big reason why I went with the Edelbrock aluminum heads. All bolt holes are helicoiled at the factory which makes the bolt holes incredibly strong. I think If I bought aluminum heads that were not helicoiled, I would drill them and add the helicoils myself while the heads are sitting on the workbench where you can get at them easily. This would head off (no pun intended) any potential problems before they start. Ed |
Just to mention that Edelbrock recommend anti seize on the header bolts into their ally heads. I discovered this after fitting mine without!!

I threw away my ARP header bolts and bought a set of stainless header bolts, drilled for safety wire, from Totally Stainless in PA

Try Stage 8 locking header bolts if you are worried about them working thier way out. No drilling or wires to worry about. About $35. total. Summit and Jegs both have them.

Used the header bolts with lockwashers. Believe they were ARP. Small diameter (3/8") 12 point head. Easy to get to with a skinny 3/8" box. Used small amount of anti-sieze for steel into aluminum corrosion protection. Used solid copper gaskets, and ultra copper silicone sealant. Stays tight, and no leaks. The ones that get really hot are the collecter bolts. You must use stainless on these or they'll rust in a heartbeat.
