Pete:

Tried a very small diluted amount in a small spot, and it didn't look so good. Glad I didn't continue. I am getting that plastic cleaning solution.

Finally Installed

I finally got enought time to install my new lexan windshield. Pretty straightforward process. The hardsest part was figureing ot how to get the gasket to stay in place when inserting the plastic into the frame. A little stretch of the rubber, some masking tape... The rest is history. Of course I had to try the wipers and they didn't scratch. So, all in all one of the easier fixes I've done. Total price was about $130.

FWIW

There is a product used in the marine industry for cleaning and polishing windows on boat dodgers etc.. This stuff works on polycarbonates, Lexan , clear plastics.

It is marketed under the name Island Girl , it is but one product they mfg for use on boat related dodger gear--

It is available at West Marine and usually at most companies that build boat canvas.

I have tinted Lexan, non-coated, on my "butterfly" and forward hatch as well as in the companionway doors on my HC38 sailboat
I've used this product since a canvasmaker informed me about it about 5 years ago, trust me it works!
It will polish out minute scratches and leaves the surface crystal clear. Just wash the Lexan with a mild solution of( like Joy) detergent and water using a soft cloth(inside of an old sweatshirt works best) then rinse throughly with fresh water, dry off with a soft cloth. Apply the Island Girl with a soft cloth (again an old sweat shirt), let haze, polish off with another soft cloth, a t-shirt works great.

Hope this helps

PS never ever use Ammonia based products on Lexan it reacts with the Lexan and causes a faint "fogging" that can never be removed--you'll always be able to see the swirl marks from where you tried to clean it--not as much evident in clear as tinted--been there, done that, replaced the Lexan

There is a product called PLEXUS that does a great job removing scratches.

Pete C can vouch for it!

I don't know that it actually removes the scratches or fills the scratches in - either way it makes a huge improvement and is easy to use.

Pat is right about Plexan!

My windshield was junk, as I wrote above. Pat turned me on to plexan and all is well in cobra land!

Cheers, Pete

Here is the stuff that I have used mainly on motorcycle
windshields and my helmet shield. I like this stuff
a lot cause it works period. I used to but it by the case
when I was in the sign business.
You can get this stuff at any plastics shop. Look
in tyhe Yellow pages under plastics dealers.

Another place to buy cleaner. Would be at your local general aviation airport. You can buy it at the airport store. It comes ready to use, or in a concentrate. It's used to clean the plastsic windshelds of airplanes. Doesn't scrach, and does a great job on bugs.

So if a guy was offering me an unused lexan Cobra windshield, what would be the right price and where do I buy a frame?
