Jaguar IRS tie link..
I am going nuts trying to find a Jaguar IRS schematic that has measurements.. Here is my situation.
I ordered a billet aluminum "tie bar" the link between the lower control arms of a Jag IRS from a supplier. It came, looked great but it didn't quite fit. I am going to send it back of course, but I was under the impression that pretty much all Salisbury IRS units were dimensionally the same. Here is my question.. Does anyone know off hand (go measure if you really want to help):D the center line distance between the 1/2 inch diameter bolts behind the differential cover of your IRS? I wondering how many variations there are?.. Please be accurate.. I as always appreciate it.. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/index.php?photo=2486 Regards, |

Hey,
I went out and measured c to c, 9 and 1/16 inches. My tie bar came from CWI. Cheers, Bill Cook :D |
Bill,
Thanks.. I got one from CWI too. It looks different than yours. I have photo's up in my gallery. I also got the differential cover, It looks great.. That was a lot of work in the 105 degree heat.. The gas tank had to come out. But worth the effort. The bolts on my rear end are pretty close to 9.250".. Doh.. I wonder what the difference in the distance is?? Anyone? I'm guessing different years.. My case is marked A68 and below that 9791.. Oh well.. Maybe CWI can make me another one.. Thanks, |
tie-bar measurement.
Scobrac,
Its quiete difficult to measure perfectly but I would say 9 5/32....on my car.BTW does the tie bar has a mechanical role? Thanks. |
no worries..
I found the answer.. The answer is yes, and no.. There is no typical dimension, but they are all the same.. Enless they are different. The most common is 9 1/16"..
I spoke to Mike the owner of CWI today and he told me that from 1961-1987 the Salisbury IRS is essentially unchanged but minor changes in dimensions were typical from year to year and casting lot to casting lot. The solution.. He would happily accept my return and make one to my specification, or.. I could as easily remove a small amount of material from the opposing ends of the tie bar and save myself the time and expense of shipping and waiting for a replacement.. I happily accepted the later as I had already done a fair amount of finish work (they were out of the polished bars when I ordered).. The result is I ended up machining .1875" +/- from the tie bar.. This is completely common and should have no structural impact on the assembly. Here is the finished product... http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/index.php?photo=2503 Regards, |
michael, this is what I came up with, when I heard that too much torque was known to bend the lower wish bohttp://www.clubcobra.com/forums/http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/data/9454ccbannerr.gif[/img]

Yes, the lower wishbone flexes, but here I would worry more about the pivot bracket breaking apart without the tie bar. Imaginge the forces involved when both wheels are at full load under a tire-burning start. The force on the rear pivot is roughly 1000 lbs, pulling straight out. Then add some nice wheel hop. %/

one more part...
think about getting the big plate underneath the rearend.
Kind of ties everything together. Got it from CWI too. See it in my pic from last night ??? Cheers, Bill Cook :D |
