Ok guys,
Everything is back together after the great disaster. With the cam gear on the distributor and cam gear also being wiped out, I started the replacement process when I thought everything was fine and tried to start it up, I washed out the cylinders. At least 6 of the 8 that is. So I completely tore the engine down and found that the 6 of 8 were blowing by so badly because all of them had busted top rings. Some of them had two breaks in them. So anyway with everything put back together I tried to start it. No such luck.
It is turning over and with the headers off I can see most all of the cyl. fire. But it doesn't want to catch and go. I have checked everything that I can think of and we have gone over it many times but still no luck.

Please give me your suggestions or comments on what you think that I may have missed or may need to check on. It is a carbed 351w with painless wiring.

Anything is appreciated, I am at my wits end, just someone new with something and maybe I can figure out what the missing link is.

Sounds like the timming is off just a little bit. Try moving it either way and it might start. Maybe a quick shot of either also help, but don't use too much.

Todd,
Go back to basics,
Take spark plug 1 out and rotate engine over to top dead center on compression stroke- place a finger over the spark plug hole- compressed air should blow out as the piston rises.Now take distributor cap off and make sure rotor is pointing at #1 plug lead,if it is you are close to being timed,if not you have to lift distributor out and rotate so that the rotor is pointing to plug 1 on the cap. The other possibility is a large vacuum leak- check if the power brake hole on the rear of the carb has being plugged.

Todd,
Check the firing order of your cam. A 351 has a different firing order than a 302,but if you have a 302 cam in your engine you can just change the spark plug leads to that firing order and it will work.To check, pull the valve covers off and and rotate engine over slowly,when the intake valve is closing ,that cylinder will fire in about 90 degrees. Just check in what sequence the intake valve closes on all 8 cylinders and write down that sequence over 2 engine revolutions.Check the plug wires on the distributor to make sure they go to the cylinders in that order.It is a common practise to put a 302 cam in a 351 as it's cheeper and there are many more cams to select from.

Check your valve adjustements, it sounds like the exhaust valves are not closing all the way. Setting valves dry is trickey. Pull out sparkplug, put finger over hole, crank motor, if it doesn't PUFF loudly, than lack of compression, check valve adjustements.

Mr. Fixit, I will go back and try adjusting the valves again.

Are you getting a good spark? If you remove a plug wire and put it across a valve cover and crank the motor, it goes go SNAP...SNAP...SNAP... right? The carb float bowls have fuel as well too, right?

Got fuel, got spark, the valves I have not checked yet and I think that this may be my problem because when you run #1 up to TDC you don't get the big woosh of air. I am trying to get to it tonight but I have to pack and get ready to go to Toronto in the morning.
Would like to get some QT in with the boys tonight also.
