Jag Rear
As I understand things the Jag ring and pinion are the same as a Dana 44. Is this true ? If so can I use Dana 44 carriers ( differential ) , like the Auburn or Eaton, etc....

That is consistent with my research on the subject to date. It does require the fine spline for interchangeability. I believed it was a Salisbury unit (English) however with GM center internals and a 5 lug 4.75" hub I now think otherwise. I'll be interested to know what you come up with as I'm looking to put a Dana 44 limited slip assembly in one of my Jag rears.

Hi Fordracer All Dana 44 rears are not alike. The ring gear has different bolt pattern. Their are a couple of different carriers for the 44 The axles are 18,28,30 spline. I converted my Jag rear to a 30 spline Locker and the ring gear would not line up the holes. I had to drill out the carrier to make it fit. Make sure the bolt pattern will fit on the carrier and the stub shafts will go into the carrier. If you get a 4-wheel drive mag. they have alot of drivetrain parts for sell. There prices are they good, and a couple have a lifetime warranty of the rear case breaks. No Charge. Check this out before you deceide on what you have to do. Rick Lake

There was a multi-part article in Street Rodder magazine in 1995 that covered some basic details on the identification, dimensions, teardown, rebuilding and assembly of the various Jag rears. Part 2 of that article [April 1995 issue] stated that while a change in the housing in 1987 prohibits swapping of some external parts from the later units with the earlier ones, "...The Dana 44 (Spicer) gear arrangement, using standard American nuts and bolts, remains unchanged. This is the same Dana 44 used in GM four wheel drive trucks since the early Sixties and 20 other manufacturers world wide."
I have already scanned and emailed this article series to several people who asked about it a while ago and can send it out to anyone else who might want to see it-let me know by email. I just scanned the pages as .jpg image files and, while I tried to keep the file size small but readable, anyone wanting it would receive it more conveniently via a cable or other high-speed connection. The article doesn't have sufficient detail to serve as a primary spec resource for a rebuild, but I thought it had an abundance of useful info. Dan |
I have a page from a 4 wheel mag with quiklok, auburn, detroit etc lockers. They claim they'll beat any price. 1-800-421-1050 is the number. Dan, I'd be interested in that article if you get a chance to e-mail it to me.

Hi Dan Heck I would like to get a copy of the article you are talking about. I put a 30 spline carrier in my Jag rear series 3 with 331 gears and the carrier holes had to be enlarged for the ring to fix. Hard no problem setting up the rear once the little problem was fixed. I got my carrier from drivetrainwarehouse 1-888-432-7656, they have a lifetime guarantee onparts. Good Luck. Rick Lake
