bypass or remote mount with thermostat
I want to put a thermostat in the oil cooler system. I would prefer that the thermostat be part of the remote mount or bypass on the block. But, I want flow through the filter no matter what!
I have looked around a bit and found some in the UK but not here in the states. I am looking for anyone who knows where I can get such a thing and your experience with the product. I have already searched Club Cobra and I see a number of posts where a thermostat has been added but not one that is part of the bypass or remote mount. While we are at it, any recommendations on an inline water thermostat? |
If your biggest concern is oil going through the filter while the cooler is being bypassed, that's not a problem. Run the oil from the block to the thermostat. Run the thermostat exit to the filter, and then back into the block. In-line thermostats always bypass the cooler at low temps - they don't stop flow altogether.

I am using a take-off plate under the filter for my oil cooler, with built-in thermostat from Mocal UK.
Works fine, 'cept that I had to really go at that thing with a die-grinder (dremel in the US??) to ensure the thing flowed oil properly. Discovered that the take-off ports were 75% occluded by excess casting material. Always worth looking at and thinking hard about parts like these. |
Oil Thermostat
Here's an option for the thermostat you are seeking...

Mocal pieces, including apparently a sandwich adapter with thermostat built in, are available at Racer Parts Wholesale. The price seems to be about 1/2 that of the Canton. They also have a much cheaper in-line thermostat of brand X vintage for less than $40.

The thermostat is also available from

You can purchase a sandwich style oil cooler adapter with built in thermostat from B.A.T. in Florida, http://www.batinc.net/main.htm . They have sandwich types to fit Ford motors complete with 1/2 NPT female threads . I run one on my 351W and it seems to work quite well. It restricts oil flow through the cooler unless the oil temp exceeds 180*. It takes up no more room than the original oil cooler adapter plate. The thermostat merely replaces the bypass valve inside that large screw cap on the side of the adapter.
