helmet/nomex suit--first time at a track
will be going to my first track event and looking for ideas on what to buy for helmen /driving suit and any on line places to purchase

Actually, if it your first time, don't feel you have to get the 'best dressed drivers award.' Usually a suit is not required, just long sleeve and leg cotton. My first time I bought an open face Simpson with Nomex lining, Nomex lined gloves, Nomex socks and Nomex lined shoes. It worked fine. I'm glad I didn't get the suit. It was in the high 80's and I was sweating enough with just pants and a shirt. Roscoe |

You think you were hot that day????? Wait until you are on fire! :eek: :eek: :eek: Steve, I agree, for most driving events that amateurs like ourselves do, long sleeves and pants are fine. At some point, you will get overly concerned about safety and start upgrading to the key elements for both yourself and your car. If you are only 'curious' at this point, don't spend the cash until you know you want to do this on a regular basis. It all adds up. |

For occasional track days, you do not need a high end triple layer 800.00 dollar suit. (Of course, if there is a fire, you may wish you had one) Try Racesuit they carry proban suits that are not too expensive. For a helmet, get a full face unit, that is SA 00 approved. (This way you will be able to use the unit longer before having to replace it as sanctioning bodies do not like units over 5 years old.) |

Basically it is your bod. The suit and helmet only help in an incident. Determine how badly you are willing to be injured and proceed to the check out. Example at SAAC open track your only requirement is a Snell 95 (i think) helmet in the starter groups, yet they run as fast as the vintage racers who are required to wear Nomex. Consider the Nomex long undies. Full suits are heavy...and hot. With the underwear tops and bottoms you can go with a lighter cotten suit which breathes much better. Plus, I'm a big guy and the heavy suits are uncomfortable to me. One would think either the heavy Nomex suit, or a light suit with the undies would be about the same, but my experience is the latter is cooler somehow. Besides, when that cheaper light suit gets tattered you don't feel quite so bad pitching it and buying a replacement.

I have 4 or 5 driving suits and a couple of brand new ones in double and triple layer that I do not plan on using. The "used" ones are in great shape and I would be willing to "donate" them in return for a donation to CF/Jenny. Let me know. :) My email works. |
Don't fall for this Steve. I have seen these suits. Every one has a soup stain down the front.

Hi Steve How much is your hands, face and body WORTH??? The odds of you having a problem in your car is very low at a track. 500.00$ is a small price to pay for a jacket,gloves, and helmet. Their are many places to buy good safty equipment. I was in the fire company for 7 years, burnt flesh is a smell you never forget. Be smart. Skin graffs are no fun. I am putting a halon system in my car this year. Just a thought:) Rick Lake
