Fan Shrouds
I am upgrading my current electric fan to a Spal 16" high output model (Puller). I am going to have to make mounting changes and was wondering what other Cobra's fan shrouds look like? Any tips or suggestions?

Keep the fan blades 1" or more away from the rad core. Make a shroud out of cardboard first to get a rough template. Then it's tin bending time. Four trapezoidal sections that come together in a low pyramid with the fan in the middle. Hold together with rivits and silicone, attached to the mounting braces for the fan.

In case you didn't know, you can buy an electric fan that includes a shroud. I bought and installed one from Flexalite last weekend. It isn't as attractive as a well done metal shroud, but it works very well. |
Mr. Fixit,
Could you post or send me some pictures of your fan shroud? Rich |
I tend to be a bit paranoid as far as engine temp goes. I have a 16" fan rated at 1600 CFM and while the engine has never overheated, even in 95 degree temps, once the fan comes on, it never goes off since the engine temp basically stays at 190 or so. I have put the pink stuff (name?) in the rad and it didn't make any difference. I have a 180 degree thermostat and a CSI electric water pump.
I am considering an aluminium rad and/or a better fan. I believe that some 16" fans are rated at over 2000 CFM. The other worry is the power draw of the present fan which appears to be quite high. Any thoughts on the ideal fan/rad combination? Wayne |
