Wheel Polishing
I made a mandral out of 3" round stock to fit in the center of the center lock wheel and spin it in a large lathe. Then used several various grits of sandpaper and ultimatly "Mothers Aluminum Polish" to bring out a brilliant shine on the outer lips and the area connecting to the spokes. I was fortunate to have access to a large lathe, it helped eliminate alot of "elbow grease"!!!

Some things you can't pay me to do, polishing aluminum wheels is one of them. I send them out to a local polisher who does them cheap and quickly to a standard I would not be able to reproduce myself. Once they're shiny, it's pretty easy to keep them that way with mother's.

Polishing aluminum wheels is a lot of work
I'm with Mr. Fixit on this one - I had access to a large lathe, a spare hub to set them up on, and a large variety of different grades of sandpaper and emery cloth. I spent HOURS on my wheels, and could not get them like I wanted.
The surface MAY have been a little courser than normal, as I had the wheels machined to create a deeper area for polishing. I ended up sending them out, and they STILL didn't come out as smooth and shiney as I wanted. I sent them back again, and after the third polishing, I got what I wanted. For maintainence, I have found that "Mother's" wheel polish is coarser than "The Treatment" brand. I use Mothers to start, and The Treatment to finish. Any of you who happen to polish a set of real Magnesium wheels instead of Aluminum wheels will especially notice the differnce. Regards, Jeff Burgy |
