How do Detroit Tru-Trac differentials work?

DV has me convinced that my car would benefit from the strength and reliability of the Tru-Trac diff. Any idea how they are torque sensing? Do they have a dog style engagement, or are there clutch packs inside? If there are clutches inside, can they be adjusted, and how often are they likely to wear out under extreme conditions?

Any ideas on the best price on this product? It looks like it has a Ford SVO part number of M-4204-T3.

Thanks!

I'll be watching this post like a hawk! I to want to get one, thanks for the part number.

:) 750HP Have you looked into running a torque proportioning diff? Check Serria racing products out of Washington state. I run one in my Ford 9in. No locking and unlocking. Pulls strong thru the turns. Lot of stock car racers run them on road racing. They can be set up for oval or straight or road course. They handle 700 plus HP and 3400 lbs. with no problem. I use to run a Detroit locker, no contest to what the torque proportioning diff. feels like. No clutchs or springs in it just worm gears. They run about $650.00 US. Good luck................

Serria,,,,Serriaracing,,,,,search results turned up no hits. Got a link or another clue to seach for?

Try DPI racing products. Dan Press is the onwner, long time west coast racer and car builder. Makes a lot of brake componets also. :D

750,
I run a shortened 9" with new version Tru-Trac with 31 splines and it works great. No clutches to wear out and no special gear oils. The helix gears are engaged with gravity "throw-out" races. I still get some "chirp" on quick tight corners...maybe doesn't disengage fully unless you slow down.

I push maybe 350 hp to the rear and am happy with the traction although I'm still breaking things in (engine, clutch, my juevos, etc.)

Try looking at Currie Enterprises in Anaheim Ca $450 w/$500 installation and setup.

By the description, it sounds like the Tru-trac is a Torsen design. True?

Double Venom 09-19-2002 06:47 AM

I FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!!

Finally in our endless hours of searching, (Craig, I told you we had it buried!) I found our Tru-LOK unit.

I'll get some close up pictures today and see if I can't get a picture to show the helicoil/worm gears in the center of the center section.

Does that make sense? Maybe Bob or JBL can tell us how this thing works and why it works so well.

DV... oh I am so lost

scratch 09-19-2002 09:48 AM

Bob,
re: Torsen, I'm not exactly sure, but I know the Tru-Trac is a "throw-out" worm gear engagement...no cones or clutches

DV
I think "Tru-Lok" is a different concept from "Tru-Trac"...but what the hell do I know...

I found a brief (very) explanation at...

www.southernhighrollers.com

"Tru-Trac" had a website somewhere but I cannot find it.

BTW, doing engine and drivetrain work is a hell of a lot easier than hanging fiberglass doors, my current nightmare.

...should hav' bought a ERA or SPF to begin with...this building from ground up has cost me years of hair loss.

Tru-Trak
Tru-LOK

Two different animals. As if they didn't already know how easily I am confused!

DV-- Still trying to get pictures

When you guys get this thing sorted out let me know. I will consider buying one. Flipper35- thanks for the links but now I am even more confused. It does't take much to confuse me though.

Oh My gawwd!
Flipper I just got the time to take a look at your links.

The unit we are talking about IS the Detroit "TRU-TRAC"!

Please don't confuse me anymore :)

Now why can't we find Detroit Tru-Trac's web page??

Here's a link to the rear end, Tru Trac, Tru-Trac, etc., etc. and the company we worked with.

Ahhhh, I'm worn out just reading all these links!!! :) Just to throw one more into the equation, Richard JBL posted THIS TORSEN LINK on MY OTHER DIFFERENTIAL THREAD .....

About the only thing I have to go and reread is how to determine what is the best torque bias ratio for a roadracing Cobra....

Many of us (myself especially) have been confused about the specifics of these Tru-Tracs, but we're all learning :3DSMILE:
