What should 500 mile oil look like?
I followed someones advice on here for oil changes on a brand new motor (roller cam 302). They said to change the oil at 1/2 hour, then again at 500 miles. I changed the 500 mile oil last night and was surprised to see it decidedly black. Not completely opaque, kinda like coffee. Is this normal? I was glad to see no chunks or flakes of any kind.

My oil was like that at 1700 miles. Someone told me that the engine could be running rich which would cause discoloration. Apparently it can lead to the oil washing off of the piston rings (if left unfixed) and can wear the rings prematurely. Then you get grey smoke.

I changed my oil the first time at 400 miles per the engine builder and it just had a few traces of black in it. I then called and was told that is normal as no matter how clean the block was, there can be a little discoloration due to added oil lines, coolers, filters, & etc. Since then I have never had any really black oil, just what I would call normal as my driver car which is a stock 1965 Comet with a 289 and automatic has blacker oil in it when I change it then the Cobra does. I am not a chemical engineer but I was told that heat will cause some discoloration too. Ron61 Ron Widener |
richness is a factor the mixture is a factor and so is the brand of oil you are using it could also be fro whats been left in your oil pan if it doesnt seem rich or to hot and its running ok leave it alone

New motors still usually have some residual moly asembly lube in them. It's blackish grey and won't hurt anything. If there is any doubt whatsoever about debris being in your oil, cut open the filter housing and look for metal. It takes a couple of oil changes to get all the moly out.

Coffee is ok. When it starts looking like cappuccino you have to start worrying.

If it looks like coffee with cream, you're in trouble, there's water in there. If there's whipped cream and cinnamon on top, forget the motor, you need help.

A lot depends on the type of oil you used.....I use Shell Rotella 15/40 in everything from the lawn mower on up....It turns black in less than a thousand miles on every vehicle I have ever put it in,it is a diesel grade oil and will do it on any vehicle,regardless of mileage......Offers great engine protection though,my last company car had 250,000+ miles and my present one has 170,000+ miles and neither ever used a drop of oil and have never even had the valve cover off............ Also a good idea to cut open the oil filter and check it out,not a bad idea to do it at the next oil change also.... David |
