How much lubricant in Toploader?

I am changing the lubricant in my toploader. I know to fill until level with filler, but approx how much lube is it?

Jeff Frigo 10-05-2002 02:17 PM

About 1.5 quarts. Buy 2 and you will have more than enough.

What weight gear oil are you guys using? Synthetic?

I was told by my transmission shop to use a good 90 weight gear lube. I also read somewhere that synthetic may not be the best to use.

Did your transmission shop happen to give you any brands that they think are better than others. I have the T-5 top loader and my oil in it doesn't look like 90 weight at all. I talked to one shop here but am wondering now as they recommended a good synthetic transmission fluid. I am in no hurry as mine is very clean and I won't be adding any for a long time I hope but would like to know which way is best. I am looking at my Tremec T-5 service manual right now and they say " DO NOT USE GEAR OIL IN THE T-5 TRANSMISSION SINCE THIS MAY DAMAGE THE BLOCKING RING MATERIAL." It says " Most T-5 transmission models use Dextron 11 automatic transmission fluid." And that is what mine looks like when I pull the inspection fluid as it is reddish in color. I am not trying to start an argument but really wonder as I sure don't want to mess mine up if I ever have to do any work on it. Also a locat transmission shop toldme about the same thing but I am not sure I trust them as they have a less than stellar reputation. Thanks for any information.

RON - - -

THE A.T.F. WORKS JUST FINE IN THE T-5 - - BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO USE IT IN A FORD TOP-LOADER.

90 WGT. DINOSAUR JUICE ONLY.

Y'ALL HAVE AREALLY GREAT DAY,

Thanks Blackjack. Now I feel a little easier. I knew that the fluid that was in it was reddish and looked like what the manual for both the Tremec and World Class T-5 recommended but thought I would ask someone who could really verify it for me. A friend of mine has the World Class T-5 racing transmission and I know he used the ATF Dextron11.
