Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch.... Good or Bad?
Bought a centerforce 11" Dual Friction (#DF70000) for my "play car" (Non Cobra). I CANNOT speed shift the toploader above 5000RPM... A buddy has a similar problem with a "Brand X" car with a Centerforce clutch...
Anyone have similar experiences?

Art, I've got a Centerforce Dual, and I have a similar problem with my Cobra...reworked all the linkage (clutch and shifter), it got a little bit better, but above 5000 it sure isn't fast; not as fast as 'Vettes or my first Cobra (toploader, McCloud clutch). Anyone else have this problem?

I have a Centerforce 12" clutch in my 1969 Torino Cobra and I have never had a problem speed shifting it. But it is not a toploader. It has the Borg Warner close ratio 4 speed that Ford used in the performance cars back then with NASCAR running gear. I think it has been in there about 15 years now. Also I don't drive the car a lot as it is sort of rare and costs to much to have parts made if I break something. I have an 11" Centerforce in my Cobra with the World Class T-5 toploader but I don't speedshift it as I am more of a road racer type. May try it one of these days just to see if I have the same problem.

Dual disk clutch setups are for longer life, not track use. The extra mass of having the extra disk and steel plate in he pressure plate assembly (on the same diameter as factory). A McLeod single disk clutch will hold great and weigh much less.

The Centerforce Dual Friction IS a single disc, diaphragm clutch setup.... Smooth, light pedal pressure

I've had very good luck with McLeod clutches in the past... Coulda/Woulda/Shoulda....:( |

Oops,
Misread the DUAL part of the post. Anyway, I don't know anyone who will recommend centerforce products. I have always had good luck with the McLeod stuff. I still standby the comments made about dual disk clutches, even if it doesn't apply to your problem.

The Centerforce problem with high rpm shifting is said to be caused by the weight system. Due to the weights, centrifugal loading continues to increase with rpm to the point of making shifting difficult.
I researched multi-disc racing clutches when building my car and all the techs at all the manufacturers said the same thing: "if you're going to use it on the street then call Red Roberts at McLeod and have him build a 10" street twin". It is supposed to be the best available for a street driven, high rpm shifting cars.
The twin disc design provides increased holding with less pessure and the 10" dia is the best compromise of low polar moment of inertia and the ability to launch without it being a switch. They also have an 8" but as the polar moment of inertia decreases, so does street manners.

Why complicate your life. I open track my cobra(660hp) and broke a TKO. When I put the new tranny in I checked the clutch which was like new. It is a ford motorsport 10.5 inch cobra clutch. It works great, maybe I am lucky. Also, I run a relatively low rear end 3.89's which may make clutch life easier. Scott

I bought a Gold Center-force and the same problem I am having. The trans will not shift above 5000 rpm. I tryed a Richmond 6-spd than a G-Force semi clutchess 5 spd. I race both autocross and roadrace and both trans will not shift. I can get the trans out of gear but will not upshift or down shift above 5000 grand. The guys with no problems are running McLeod clutches or Hayes. Any body want a new Gold Centerforce???:CRY: Rick Lake

I know this is unheard of, but lift for a fraction of a second. Also much easier on the drive trane. :D:3DSMILE::D

Gee Thanks Jeff Frigo. Just what a wanted, lifting as you drive by and wave. 2nd place or first place loser. Lifting is not an option. This is why I spent 5 grand to get a racing 5 spd. Thanks for the help Jeff. :p ;) :D Rick Lake
