Motor Mounts won't align!

Well, we lowered the engine in for the first time last night, and guess what. My passenger side motor mount is too tall. Any thoughts, other than the obvious(shorten them). I can't get the hole to line up for the bolt to go through. We pondered and tried everything for hours.

There are two different heights of otherwise identical windsor motor mounts available. I can't tell how far off your's are in the picture. If you leave the bolts loose until they are all in place then tighten up, that can work, but it may place undue tension on the rubber mounts. Not the best solution, but it has been done before, is to "oval" all the holes (just on the replaceable mounts) so they can line up. Not the recomended method though. It's nice when everything just lines up to start with though.

it's about 1/2" off. I don't want to put undo stress or a "bind" on anything, like you said, it's nice when everything lines up! :D
I guess I can get the "A" shortened a bit and it'll line up. I wonder if it'll make the motor sit cock-eyed. blake |
Also, the mounts aren't welded to the frame yet. If I connect them to the motor mounts with the 1/2" bolt and lower it down, the bottom part of the the "a" mount binds up and sticks out 1/2"
from the bottom of the frame... it's only on the passenger side. Drivers side sits down perfectly. i'm at a loss...:( blake |
I ran into a similar situation with my A&C. My mounts were 3/4" off on both sides. I made spacer blocks from a scrap 3/4" piece of steel to fill the voids.
Before you land on a solution see where you'd like to place the engine - centered or offset. It is not uncommon in hotrods for engines to sit slightly to the passenger side to offset driver weight and/or to provide room for the steering column. I chose centered, however. Good luck. |
Lots of cobras have been built with the motor position determined by where the sidepipes line up. A quarter inch this way or that and everything still looks centered.

Fooling around with a complete engine isn't all that easy. If you are going to have to play with this quite a bit, I suggest that you get hold of a scrap engine block and use it to do all of your trial fitting. I bolted the bell housing to a scrap engine block and put that in the car. I then bolted the tranny to it to make sure that everything fit correctly. You could even put heads on if you wanted. I found that this worked very well. Wayne |
Did you get the rubber mounts from B+B? I have a used 351w that I put in mine. The mounts that were on the engine didn't fit the frame mounts. Ordered them from B+B then put the engine in. Jim

Everything came from B&B. The rubber engine mounts included.
I have a welder/fabricator coming over today with his welding truck to look at it and see what he can do. i'll let y'all know what happens and post some more photos! blake |
The welder will probubly laugh and say, "You were worried about that? Then make sparks and leave a factory looking job.

Don't cut anything untill you call the folks at B&B! My friend built one and they were very helpful with any problems.

Welder came over and fixed it right up. The motor mounts weren't the same size. about 1/4" off. He did a little cutting and welding and grinding, and then WALA. The engine, headers, sidepipes, transmission, EVERYTHING, fits perfect, it's level, and i'm happy!
