idle

i have spoken to several people(engine builders) over the last month and half of them say that i could get as good idle/drivablility as i have with my webers is this possible?? does anybody have good idle/drivability with a cam or bigger cam than mine?? 560 lift 248 @.050 110 lobes solid flat???

347, not sure I understand what these guys are tellin' you. Never used webers but most (all?) who do say their idle is better with the webers than with standard carbs, if set up right. Long duration also plays hell with idle; my duration is 12 degrees shorter than yours, but I have VERY good drivability with my solid flat-tappet: 571 lift, 236@0.050, 110 lobe separation, 750 rpm idle with a nice lope.

i forgot to say "a four barrell could idle as well as my webers"

The last handful of bigger camshaft motors that I've played with are all solid rollers..... BUT - they can easily go up to mid 260s in duration with a manual trans using 347 or more cubes without a hint of a problem. Idle's closer to 1,000rpm, but a 4 barrel's no problem!

Remember how light a Cobra is - much easier to get off the line than a heavy old sedan...

FWIW, my engine is running a Crane cam, 0.587" lift, 248 deg duration @ 0.050". I'm set up with dual Holley 600 cfm carbs, vacuum secondaries. Timing is set to 10 deg @ idle, 38 deg at 3200 rpm. The engine idles reasonably well at 900 rpm with no problem.
