Gas Tank Leak
I finally filled the gas tank up enough to realize there is a leak. The gas tank is a modified GM tank that I purchased from my kit manufacturer, Everett- Morrison. Since E-M is no longer answering their phones, I will need to repair the leak myself. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? I know where the leak is coming from (bad weld where they capped off the original filler). Do I remove the tank and have it rewelded? Is there a tank sealer that I can use? Duct tape? I want to do this right the first time so I don't have to pull the tank 6 months from now and do it again.:(

Remove it, take it to a good radiator shop or custom welder and get it fixed right. There are epoxies and such that will work, for a while, but I would want it welded. Or call fuel safe and get a REAL gas tank for a cobra.

I've got the factory EM tank too, (no leaks), but I've seen several threads about a vent tube, my tank does not have one, the filler cap has a small hole inside the spring loaded rubber gasket - is that all it needs? I agree with Mr. Fixit, get it done right. Dan |
Good time to add the vent tube for the filler, or change the fuel gauge sender, or whatever else you might ever need to do to the tank.

I had exactly the same problem with the GM tank and an amature patch over the filler hole. First fill up and woosh!
Mr. Fixit is spot on. Take it to a good radiator shop. That's what I did and it never leaked again....there. I did later develop a leak somewhere around the new filler neck in the tank. You might want to check that too. Like the other posts said, fix everything at one time. BTW, the rad. shop will pressure test for you also. That makes sure there are no leaks. Be sure the water they use to check with is all dried out before filling......:):) Al |

Thanks for the feedback. I will be taking it to a radiator shop as suggested. I like the idea of a pressure test.

Sheet metal screw with a rubber washer on it..........cover that with JB Weld..........hold the tank in place with a spare coat hanger wire.......then sell.

You might want to do like I did after the repairs are done and get the tank painted a nice shiny black by a good autobody shop....just for those who want to crawl on their knees to see under your car....:):) Hey I built part of a sawmill up north of you in Onamia back in '95. That's a cold part of the world! Good ice fishing and snowmobiling though. Hated the ticks and mosquitos in the spring! That and the humidity! Really good people in that part of the world.
