Distributor won't fit...
Well, getting closer everyday, and then another hurdle.
Did anyone have a problem installing their distributor, and getting it to seat the final 3/8" onto the oil pump shaft? I've read several things online about ways to get it to work. Everything from shaving the end of the MSD 8582 distributor(because it's tappered), to dropping the oil pan. any tricks that you recommend? thanks blake |
The hex on the oil pump shaft probably isn't lined up perfectly. Usually you can bump the starter and the distributor will fall the rest of the way in. Also, you can take a long screwdriver and turn the oil pump shaft through the dist. hole until everything lines up. No machine work should be required.

Thank god. I will try it. We actually tried bumping the starter, to no avail. I will continue to play with it. I was just reading a horror story about all the machining being done to someone's distributor and gear just to get it to fit. didn't want to go through that!

I have run into the very same problem just about every time I've tried to install a distributor. I have a "dummy" shaft I use to prime the oil pump and all I do is take the shaft and turn the oil pump shaft a little and the distributor drops in just nicely.... If after trying this and the distributor still will not drop in,check and recheck everything, you could have a "bad" distibutor,it is always possible.... David |
I thought of something else. Several years ago I was installing a distributor in an old hot rod. The engine had more rearward tilt than normal and it would not line up at all. I ended up jacking up the rear of the car about 6" and distributor fell in place. Had to do this every time! Sometimes it is the simplest things that throw us off.

I finally got it in...starter bump worked...tricky with one person...reaching over the windshield and applying pressure. the only problem is that I lost TDC on #1....AHHHHHHHHHHHh....

Use some jumper wires to make a remote start switch so you don't have to be a contortionist.:)

Ford's starter solenoid makes it easy to bump the motor over using only needle nosed pliers.

Why not just put the car in 3rd or 4th and rock it until the distributor drops in???

I don't have the drive shaft in there yet....otherwise i guess i'll try that one next time....
good news is that it's in, and it's not somthing that's fun to do :D |

It may have a high torque starter that does not use the solenoid you are thinking of.:D Steve |
Everything could use a ford starter solenoid, even my chevy has one. You can wire the high torque starters the same way, the solenoid on the starter becomes redundant, all switching activity of a high current nature occurring at the firewall solenoid. That way you can avoid having a live battery cable running down there by your headers (kinda tight fit on my chevelle).
