Jag Power-Lok lube - Pennzoil Gearplus OK?
Looking for a good oil/friction modifier package for my Jag w/Power-Lok rear axle.
Bought Pennzoil Gearplus 80W-90 GL-5. According to the package it "does not need a limited-slip top treatment nor is one recommended" and "is suitable for use in high performance differentials including racing and sports cars." Any experience out there? Hype or not? Tom |
Tom,
You're pretty safe with any gear oil that states that it is for use in limited slip diff. Your carrier is basically the same as a Dana 44. I have not found it necessary to utilize special additives in either Jag or Dana applications. I have not experienced chatter or unusual wear. I will be frank, I don't like Pennzoil in an engine at all. It is parafin based and the sludge is incredible. Don't know if the diff. oil is the same or not. Personnally, I like Kendall products. Frankly though, I've used NAPA diff. oil and never had any problems, so go figure. You can make it unnecessarily complicated by listening to all of the hype. If you want to feel more secure, buy what the Jag dealer in your area sells or recommends. Al |
Hi Tom You are getting crazy. Go and buy a good 80-90 rear diff fluid and add a posi lube additive from GM. The additive is a friction modifier to help the grip on fiber discs in your posi rear. If you beat on the car hard, change the fluid every 12000 miles. This is the best system for your rear. After your put the fluid in the rear, do hard right and left turns in circles to mix the fluid and modifier into the fiber material. Put some water under the wheels and do a quick burnout to make sure the posi is turning both tires. When done go for a road test. A new rear may drag around a turn until it breaks in. Good Luck Rick Lake
