porting

Has anyone here run stock edlebrok alumn. heads on a 428, then gone back and had them ported/polished?

was it worth it?

Noticable gains or losses?

Would you do it again?

what are some of the specifics? (cam, compression, etc.)

thanks for the info.

Trying to find a way to up the net horsepower a little.
would like to hit 500 to 550 at the flywheel on pump gas.

Todd,
your post got me curious of what the gains would be. I checked Edelbrock site and found some info on their heads ( I'm sure that you are probably aware of the specs). I found this info on a general search that was pretty interesting (at least it was to me)
http://www.bob2000.com/frd2.htm

note the sizes of the ports on the stock vs. Edelbrock. I 'm not sure that the intake and heads even match however, the size compared to the stock is definately smaller. I would think that the optimum would be to have larger matched ports intake to head and larger exhaust ports again matched to the headers. Better flow volume in and out should equal more power.

just my thoughts,

in light of what monster has posted, does anyone one have any input of the best combination for alumn. intake and head match, that provide the best flow?

also how about having the side pipes chrome plated?
I currently have the powder coated silver type and looking
into having them plated?
Stainless is a little to $$ for me.

Thanks

Larger cross sectional intake runners kill low speed power. It is a balancing act between not restricting upper rpm flow, while retaining good low rpm velocity through the intake runners.
