I'm replacing My BFGs, What Should I Get?
Hello All:
I've decided to replace the Radial T/As on my SPF (245/60-15 front, 275/60-15 rear). I'm convinced they are the cause of my steering wheel shake. Which brand and tire would you guys recommend? Bob |
I "smoked" my T/A's as an "excuse" to go with something better. That "smoking" 'em part was a riot, more fun than one should be allowed, lol.
Yokohama DOT autocross tires (AO32R) were my choice! I would do it again in a second! The additional traction of ANY DOT race tire is SO far superior to T/A's there is no comparison. In my opinion, it borders on "reckless" to NOT get the stickiest tires you can find with the light weight and horse power of a Cobra! These cars are all ready "dangerous" (don't you love it)! Ernie |
For the street and occasional track use I favor the BFG Drag Radials in the rear. They stick.

My choice
The Pirelli set for the Ferrari 456...directional front tires, Z rating, very high quality, dry traction, high speed stability..but don't last a really long time:

I rode in a Contemporary with Yokahamas (really good "stick-to-it-ivness" back then---1998), but I recently was rammin' around Rhode Island in an SPF (same color/stripe scheme as yours, matter of fact) with Goodyear (something I---Ted Koppel's got 'em in Ron Davely's 2002 calendar (the one with yah cah, too, I think!). Great Asp recommends 305s on the back. The guy in RI has 305s and also says put 265s or WIDER(!) on the front! It may make you "tramline" a tad, but it also seems to "smooth things out". Erratum---Goodyear "something" IIs) not "I". Are they "eagles" but not the big-letterd racing variety? Roman numer II, though.

Very few 15 in wide enough for SPF (305 no longer around). Have changed to BFG's for street and use 17 in Hoosiers for track.

Tires
I currently run Hoosiers and they are great....wide as you want em and stick to the road....no noise at any speed and seem to wear well...also they really stick to the road.....
By the way...these are on 15 inch Team III wheels....... |

You guys have started a tire forum. I'd like to know the scoop on Mickey Thompson's line. I heard you can go DOT with high-speed ratings and super widths. Do any of you guys run them on the street? Where is the central distributorsship? I've tried TWO web-sites wh/ don't cover the whole line. |

On another thread, Kuhmo's have a decent 15".
I know you don't want to hear this, I didn't either, but the tires you want with the performance characteristics you want are to be had in 17" wheel sizes. And 17's don't look out of place on a Cobra. My finalists were Brigestone RE 730's from Tirerack.com, and Falken FK451's from Vulcantire.com. Got the Falkens. They stick like glue dry, and in the rain. Corner with no squealing. No vibration or balance problems. And now with over 11,000 miles, no perceptable wear. I'm a convert, and a believer. Old BFG T/A's can't hold a candle to these new 17's Tip. Tirerack.com has a customer feedback forum. Read on before you plunk down your hard earned $$$ on name brands based on what the factory advertizing has to say. BFG, Goodyear, Dunlop, Pirelli didn't earn the best grades. But the lesser known brands, at least for performance tires, got the better scores and end user feedback. I'm not even a tiny bit disappointed with these Falkens, would replace them with the exact same thing, and the price. Under $500 for the set of four, delivered. |

Bob in Ct. How about a set of GT Qualifiers 255 front 295 rears. They are better than BFg's and about the same price. I race the Mich pilots 17" and street drive the GT's Dunlops are softer then BFG's and handle better. my two cents. And keep the knock offs Rick Lake ;) :)

Actually I used a set of Team III Halibrand look alikes's in 17 x 8 front, 17 x 9 1/2 rear. $300 apirce, spinners extra. They also make a 17 x 11 if you want to use a bigger tire. I used 235/45ZR17 front, 275/40ZR17. This is plenty for my driving, but with a big block, you might want to consider the 11" wheel with 305/35 or 315/35 tires in back.
That being said, if you're using a Mustang II front end, you need to get and hold a front end alignment. Not easy the way Ford designed it. bethania-garage.com has Mustang II upper control arm brackets for $100 a pair. Aligns with shims, GM style, and stays aligned. I'm firmly in the 17" camp too. Got 4000 miles on mine and going for more. If ya got enough power, you can spin those as well :LOL: I notice you have an SPF. Isn't there a 17" option for that specific car from SPF? Regards, Tom:cool: |
