Fe Blocks
While looking at my FE book I noticed ford used the C6ME -A block for engines right up to the 428. Would that be the max overbore for that block? TNX ALEX
|
Shouldn't go more than .030 oversize.
|
jeff,
Does it matter what the block was originally or .030 over 4.130. Seems for used em for the 352 also. TNX Alex |
Not sure about a 352, but you don't want one of those anyways. Holds true for 427's and 428's though.
|
Alex -
-The "shouldn't go over .030" is something that people have just learned to say. :) The statement usually applies to 427 blocks. Not always. Depends on the thickness of the cylinder walls. A 428 block that was recently sonic checked by a good friend had thicker cylinder walls after it had been bored .060 then a standard bore 427 SO that was checked at the same time!.... I don't know the answer to your question - sorry. |
Pat is right, but it is rare to find such examples.
|
Yup...Pat's correct...up to .060 over is acceptable on most FE blocks. Under .040 is preferred, but it can be done.

I LEARN SOMETHING HERE EVERY DAY - - - A LOT OF WHICH WILL SOMEHOW GET ME INTO TROUBLE !! Y'ALL HAVE AREALLY GREAT DAY, BLACKJACK |
Jack,
I agree. I've been told I read too much. But I guess I should have asked if a c6me-a can be bored to 4.130. If the the block is poured from a mold ( FASHIONED) IN 1966 would it have the meat to go to a 428 regardless of its current ci. SORRY FOR QUESTIONS BUT TRYING TO LEARN ENOUGH TO BE DANGEROUS! HEY, ALEX,
WE ALL ASK QUESTIONS - - - - AND WE'RE ALL DANGEROUS - - - Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY, BLACKJACK |
What you need is a D3TE heavy duty 391 truck block. Sonic check it and bore it until the cows come home. These were made to take many rebuilds and survive. Mine is bored to 4.13 with plenty left in the walls. I am running a full set of Webers with Ebrock heads, big valves, roller rockers, etc. These blocks are readily available at good prices. They are, however, about 20 lbs heavier than the car block. They have more meat in the crank webs plus the thick cylinder walls.

Brian,
Thanks that is what Iwas looking for. I buried my head in Steve Christ's book and just got a bit confused with thec6me-a block till I read that it is also stamped on 330hd blocks but that "the 428 is cast with bigger cylinders" the block in question was in a f350 circa 1969. Ithink I"ll use your idea instead as my plans are for ebrock upperend. I"m looking for425-430 streetable hp to mainly cruise with. TNX Alex |
Alex,
425 to 450hp should be easy. Mine is about 500+ at the flywheel plus more torque than I will ever need. Where are you located? I have access to these blocks and can give you some contacts. |
62406 Alex Make sure that your motor oiling galleries are cleaned and alignment of bearing holes is done. There are a couple of mags. with articles on blueprinting the oiling system for a long lasting motor. This is MOST IMPORTANT TO DO. Rear main has a small galley to # 5 main. Talk to Gessford machine. Ask for George and see what he says. Rick Lake

definately not .060
I have a 390 in which I had a bad experience.
I was going down the highway at about 70, going to MotorSports ranch. I was tooling along and gave it a slight bit more throttle. Blew it up. After we tore the head off the #1 Cyl. had a gach in it about 2 inches long. IT was bored .060 over. right now I have one that is bored .030 over. Good luck. |
Unless you absolutely have to have a numbers matching car, there is no reason to bore a 390 or 428 block .060 over. These blocks are readily available.
Under no circumstances should you bore a 427 more than .030. They start with a thin wall to begin with. It would be better to run a 427 with 8 sleeves rather than boring one .060 oversize. |
