A useful bolt on...?

I just noticed these bolt-on electric motors which eliminate the need to power your water pump off of the crank...thereby supposedly freeing up horsepower for about $80...are they useful?

The reason I ask is I have a beautiful new high polished water pump coming on my 514 and I don't want to give that up for a simpler electric water pump..unless this is a bad idea...:

Most are for drag racing use only. In other words, no continuous use. Some may be more reliable.

I've found a couple of electric water pumps made for street use, but the cheapest is more than $250. Even the ones intended for drag racing are about $200.

Perhaps this is only a motor to drive the normal water pump?

Won't be long that most exterior engine accessories will be electric-motor drive on production vehicles to reduce parasitic power losses, so expect the availability of such motors to improve. As for prices, that'll probably take a while to stabilize.

Bob:

Yah, it's a discrete motor unit with a mounting bracket...powers the standard water pump I have now...this why I thought it might be an easy install and would let me keep my high polished WP as is.....

The only question is...is this Edelbrock unit something I can count on for long term street use, or is it as kountzecobra suggets, just for drag racing, etc...?

Also...I was wondering how much HP a belt/crank driven water pump takes/uses ?

A good pump like a Stewart stage 4 with the CNC'd impeller will require less than 3hp @ 4500 rpm and flow 160 gpm.

Since I will have over 600 HP..

It hardly then seems worth the trouble, just to pick up + - 5 HP....

Mr.Fixit 11-18-2002 11:09 AM

It is for drag racing only, where it will free up some HP, but only run for a short interval. You wouldn't feel a 25 hp increase, you would need timing equipment to see the increase. Your car already has a bunch of goodies, I suggest you drive the snot out of it before "upgrading" anything else.
