Best Oil Filter

There are a lot of opinions about which is the "best" oil filter: Mobil 1 vs. Purolator, Motorcraft vs. Deutsch, Fram vs. AC Delco, etc. Following will take you to a study that provides actual data concerning oil filters:

So which is the BEST ?

speed220mph 11-18-2002 08:16 AM

The "best" filter", well that's for you to decided. But the study provides a lot of information to sift through, but to cut to the chase, go to the bottom of the page and click on "Oil Filters Overview". This section provides recommended filters and filters to avoid. There are surprises on the recommended list, which lists filters that can save you money and not sacrifice quality.

Hope that helps.

I will be using the K & N filters...

It would be nice if the person doing the study would finish the test on this make...I would love to read it... K&N is tops for air filters...

I would NEVER use any Fram...they are too restrictive at startup and some leak crud back into the motor...happened to a Dodge slant 6 I used to have...ended up with lifter/valve guide wear at 140 K this should not have happened to that motor...

Mr.Fixit 11-18-2002 01:05 PM

That's the first slant-6 I have heard of with an oil related problem. That's why they are so popular with the oil additive sellers, you can run a slant-6 with no oil all day long, so long as there is no load on it. That's what they do, they always have a slant-6 on a run stand, sans oil pan.

That's so true about the old slant sixes. Rusted-out radiator with a cupful of water and one quart of wasted oil--still run all day. Course, not the peppiest of engines, either.

It was a 1974 *Gold Duster*

It was my wife's transportation car when she commuted into South Sacramento where she worked at a TV station...perfect for driving in that war/crazy zone, and leaving parked...that old beaut never failed...only thing that ever happened was one flat and the alternator belt broke once...what a car...I kept it for years after she bought a new car, used it to run errands and such...and it really tore me up to sell it.. the admonitions about (some) Fram filters in the study posted above, are true... the bypass valves do not work right !

Oh, by the way, I won a bet once by exchanging the starter in 7 minutes flat...lol They are super nice to work on...

Wix Racing

I went to a NASCAR race and noticed that an awful lot of the oil filters I was seeing are Wix Racing filters. I ordered some from my local parts store and they run around 10 bucks. I use a Dry Sump system with a Weaver oil pump which is similar to the Nascar setup. I also have a remote filter setup so I don't know for sure if they make the Race version for regular motors but I would think so.

I run a racing Wix on an Ernie Elliot NASCAR remote mount. They cost $20-$30 each where i get mine. I run a no-bypass fine "endurance filter", has a 1&1/2 inch 12 thread bushing. Here is their web site:

WIX racing. Buy it from NAPA. Nuff said

justa6 12-26-2002 07:15 AM

Hal,

I just checked my price on the Wix Race filters. I get a discount at NAPA and they are 12 bucks for the filters.

It may be mine uses a different number than what your using.
