no oil pressure?!?!!?
Ok, after 500+ miles in 2 weeks, and a great saturday afternoon cruise...I put the cobra away for the night. Sunday afternoon I fire it up and WAHLA! there is NO oil pressure. thinking it's a "sender" problem, I pop the hood, and everything looks in tact and wired up...look at the side pipes...and....uh--oh....oil is coming out of the side pipes?
Any ideas?!?!!? no oil pressure and oil shooting out of the side pipes?!?!? blake |
Broken ring or ...?
Don't run it further, lad ! Sounds serious... !
Broken ring? (will that cause low OP?) bad head gasket? ?? What do you motor gurus say? |
Blake,
I would start the troubleshooting by pulling the distributor and looking to see if the oil pump shaft is sheared. If it is not, I would set up an extension and socket into an electric drill to turn the pump. (make sure the socket is not going to fall off and tumble into your eng) Remove the oil press sender and drive the pump with the drill...oil should gush out of where the sender was. now that you have a mess to clean up, at least you know your engine's heart is at least partially functioning. I have seen where plumber's tape used to seal the sender's threads blocks the tiny hole in the sender, check it out. Let us know what the results are and we will help further. Good luck.:) Steven PS, A broken ring will not cause low oil press. I'm not sure what to make of the account of the symptoms ...let's start with the basics and move on from there. |
The oil in the exaust is not a good indicator. Could be blown intake or head gasket (depending on the volume) or worse yet a cracked head. Check for water/coolant in the oil (and/or) oil in the cooling system. As for oil pressure check, the shear pin in the distributor shaft in the gear or the drive shaft itself. Keep us posted, best of luck!

Thanks! I'll check all of these this afternoon/tonight. It's strange because I drove all day on saturday...no problems at all...then sunday afternoon..started it..and wah-la....:(

Pull the distributor and remove the valve covers. Spin the oil pump with a socket and extension (tape the socket onto the extension) does it have pressure now? Is oil coming out the tops of the pushrods? It may even be that the bypass plunger in the oil pump is stuck open. Or the pump is not getting turned by the dist. Check the hex drive on the bottom of the dist shaft for wear, same goes for the oil pump drive rod, they can even break. The oil pump pickup may have broken, cracked, or come slightly loose from the pump and allow it to suck air instead of oil. The pan does have adequate oil in it, right? Don't run the engine until you find the problem, I am hoping for your sake you are mistaken about oil in the sidepipe, maybe it's just soot running out with moisture or gas.

Thanks! I'm going to go check it out during my lunch break...and check for some symptoms y'all have mentioned...
will report back soon. blake |

Ok...here's what's happened so far.
1) Pulled out the distributor...no visible signs of wear. Taped up an extension, hooked up the drill...took off the oil pressure sending unit...and gave it a spin...oil spewed out...it's getting oil...bad sending unit? 2) pulled a valve cover..no coolant..nothing strange looking. also, no oil in the coolant. pulled a couple spark plugs....greasy sooty substance on them(see photo) any thoughts? blake |

The pictures are out of focus, but I would say you are running RICH. The extra fuel in your exhaust is probubly dripping out the sidepipes, greasy from all the soot that it is carrying, and completely unrelated to your bad oil pressure sender. If everything looked OK under the inspection of the dist, spin the oil pump with a socket again, with the sender hole plugged so the oil goes to the motor instead of the floor. It should start oozing out the tops of the pushrods. If it does, put a new sender in and see what happens. And change your oil before it turns that black, drop a jet size or two as well, your rings will go away if you run that rich.

Yes the oil does look a little black for only 500 miles on it
As Fixit said...plug it up and see how she flows to the heads A quick check is to screw in a gauge or a remote line and gage to the sender port ( 1/8 pipe thread) and see what it says. Use your pre-oiler on the oil pump as you have. Once you know whether you have pressure or not, then determine if the gage is hooped or the sender. Shorting the gage very quickly should make it read full pressure. Also the resistance of the sender will decrease with pressure. Tim |
Blake,
I'm gonna send you the bill from my eye doctor  I tried sqinting and crossing my eyes to no avail  Good luck. |
Looks like the camera focused on the fender covers instead of the spark plug!!! SORRY!
it seems to be fine now...it was just the oil pressure sending unit! Thanks for all the info!! blake |
Blake,
Good news. Did the sending unit's threads have plumber's tape on them? |
Yes....they did.....should they not? The new one I just put in doesn't have them...
blake |
You ought to put teflon sealant (or tape) on all pipe threads to avoid leaks.
|
...just try not to wrap it as to create a "hanging chad" that could be ingested into that tiny hole...
