Alternator Problem
My alternator is starting to make weird noises - well actually just one weird noise, kind of a screeching...doesn't sound like a bearing and I tightened the belt so I've ruled out the belt slipping...I can really hear it when I shut the motor off, it comes to a stop cause it screeches to a hault. Any suggestions ? It's an externally regulated alt. Thanks in advance.

Check pulley-to-alternator frame clearance. The pulley may be rubbing against the front of the alternator. I've run into this before. As in your situation, my first impression was to blame a slipping belt. A bad diode will also create such as noise. Check battery voltage with the engine running. It should be about 14.5 volts.

Did you try pulling the belt and seeing how free the bearing is? Sounds like it could be a bad bearing. You might want to check out Powermaster Racing Alts.

Hey guys - So I checked pulley clearance, no prob there. Took the pulley off and the fan blades on the alternator spin freely when I push them, and I mean REAL freely, no resistance at all...Does that mean the bearing has gone bad ? The thing is still charging and seems to be working fine. Any suggestions ?

If the shaft spins free with no friction or strange noise then it is probably ok. I would look elsewhere.

Roscoe - It spins freely, but there is friction and it makes a nasty, loud screeching noise like it is rubbing against something...Not sure but I wanna replace it anyway and get a racing alternator that is NOT chrome...I hate chrome under the hood and would like to find a really good matte black, NON 1 wire, externally regulated alternator...Any suggestions ?

If the nasty noise is coming from the alternator then I would say its lunched. I am running a one wire 100amp Powermaster which came in flat black. I would be skeptical of anything really all business racing that came chromed. I've since sprayed it Eastwoods Detail Gray to match the water pump and intake. It is internally regulated but they make a variety of them.

Did you check the pulley clearance with the fan belt tensioned? I wasn't sure if you indicated if you checked the pulley with or without the belt on. If there is any small alignment problem the alternator vanes maybe touching the alternator chassis as someone suggested. If you checked with the belt off, you may have "uncocked" the pulley which means you may still have the problem.

The alternator vanes ARE touching the alt chassis and the vanes spin freely when I try to move them.
