Too much oil preasure?

My car idles at 60 PSI and tops out at 70 to 73 PSI when pushed. Is this normal? :JEKYLHYDE

I did not build the engine but the fellow that did, tells me he cannot recall exactly what type of oil pump he put in but that it’s a “racing, high volume” unit.:(

I have a double remote oil filter plus oil cooler. I don’t see this been obstructive. Your thoughts.

Thanks

Hector

What is your oil tempurature?
What type and weight oil are you using?
Those numbers are a bit high but not unusual.
What is the capacity of your oil pan?
With those higher numbers you don't want to suck your pan dry at high RPM.

Hector

With a new engine, dual remote filter, cooler, Accusump I run 70-75 when cold and around 50-55 when hot. I've never considered it a problem.

I bet if you swap the filters around it wont matter a bit.

hahahah... couldnt resist

Mr.Fixit 12-13-2002 04:44 PM

I wouldn't worry myself over that.

Go one step lower on the viscosity.

OIL PUMP

LAST SPRING WHEN I CRANKED MY MOTOR FOR THE FIRST TIME, IT IDLED AT 85 AND WHEN I REVED THE MOTOR IT WOULD GET UP TO 100 LBS. I HAD A HIGH VOLUME FORD PUMP SO I CALLED FORD. THEY SAID THAT THE HIGH VOLUME PUMPS WERE FOR OLD WORE OUT MOTORS OR RACING ENGINES. STREET MOTORS WITH FACTORY " CLOSE " TOLERANCE, DO NOT NEED A HIGH VOLUME RACING OIL PUMP!!!!!
I REPLACED THE HV WITH A STANDARD MELLING PUMP AND MY PRESSURE IS 60 -65.
OH YES, I CALLED FORD AFTER I REVED TO 6000 IN 3RD AND BLEW THE O RING OUT OF THE REMOTE OIL FILTER. WHAT A MEST! LOST 2 AND 1/2 QTS OF OIL IN 2-3 SECONDS.

CHANGE YOUR PUMP IF YOU HAVE A HIGH VOLUME PUMP.

Oil preassure

Thanks for the feedback.

I am using 10W-30 synthetic.
Standard T Cobra pan. I think the capasity is 6qt's
I don't have an oil temp gauge. Maybe Santa Claus could help.

I am not going to worry about it and just keep watching the preassure gauge.

Hey Hector:

I wrote a thread a few weeks ago in "shop talk" titled "Some thoughts on Oil Pressure, Oil Pumps and Oil Viscosity", give it a look see. It's food for thought.

Bob
