Turn Signal problem on SPF
Has anyone ever experienced a problem with turn signals in their SPF? I'm loving my new Superformance but the turn signal switch seems to bind and often does not work properly, particularly when its cooler outside, and so the blinkers are not functional most of the time. Before I start to spend time tinkering with things I wanted to see if anyone had similar experiences, and what if any solutions worked.
Thanks, Mel Sharpel |
I have not had any problems in either very hot or cold (for the Bay area - i.e., high 30's low 40's ) weather

My guess is that the switch in the steering column is sticking/binding or something. The few times it seems to work is on those real nice sunny warm days. Don't think it can be the flasher as it works sometimes, just not very often. Doesn't bother me too much, but scares the hell out of the wife (knowing we don't have turn signals).

There is a gold irridited sleeve on the column which has the detents for the turn signal. It is behind the steering wheel hub. You gotta remove the big nut to see it. Make sure it is clocked correctly. Other than that, you can try replacing the arm assembly, it is a VW part, try your local vintage VW store. (I am thinking 73 superbeetle)

If the steering wheel hub is interfering with the lever assembly itself, it may be possible to loosen the single screw on the lower potion of the lever that secures the assembly to the column itself and seperate the two by a few thousandths so they no longer bind.
Just a thought Rick |
Should easily be solved by removing the steering wheel, shaking turn signal assembly around a bit, and re installing the wheel.
At any rate, this can't hurt. |
