302 short block
Hi everyone
I am gonna change engines (302 to 302) in my JCF slabside. I've been checking around trying to get the most bang for the buck and I've come up with the following: In the 2002 Ford Racing catalog they offer a 345 HP long block for around $3300.00; they also have a 2 bolt main short block assembly. I'm trying to figure out which way to go. I have a new Eldebrock Performer RPM aluminum heads, MSD ignition, a Holley double pumper, all of which I can utilize on the short block assembly. Also the short block will give me the option of using any cam I want (Comp 280, etc.) I want to get 330-350 Hp and be able to run 6500 rpm without problems. The tech people @ Ford tell me the short block I have mentioned is the same one they use in their 345 HP long block. Ford does not warranty either engine. Opinions, Thanks, Harris |
IS ANYONE HOME??

Harris,
This won't be a lot of help but a friend of mine is looking to replace his stock 302 with one that has a little more power and he told me he has checked with PAW and Jegs. I think he said PAW offers a long and short block kit and Jegs offers a long block and short block already assembled and Jeg's prices are in the range you stated. He was asking me about the GT-40 heads that come on the assembled long block and I think after talking to all of them he has decided to get the PAW kit and put it together. I believe the PAW kit was in the $1,600 dollar range and you choose your cam and such when you order it. And I am sure they don't warranty them either. Sorry I can't be of more help. Ron:o :o :o |
I can't help with the bang for the buck part, but if you are worried about being able to handle the HP and the sustained RPMs, then put a girdle on the bottom end and you wont have to worry about that anymore. (only cost 200 bucks)

The Ford racing long block I believe that you are looking at does mention in the specs that the 345hp is based on using the Motorsport induction kit, headers and 65mm throttle body. It also does say it has roller cam and lifter but doesn't mention the rockers SRP$3195. They list 2 short blocks (1) stock block with "Explorer" roller cam no mention of lifters SRP $1395, the other is a 302/347 stroker without cam for $2495. Is there something wrong with your block? They also have listed a 302/342 "stroker kit" for 68 - 200 302's incl. pistons, rings, rods bearings for $1195.(machinine/balancing would be required but this might be a good way to go. Even with $500+ in machining if you build it you still would have about $700 - $1300 left over from the for goodies instead of buying the long block (which you would stiil need to add some parts to)
Just my thoughts, good luck, Mike "monster" |
Thanks
Mike,
My machine shop guy is saying the same thing as you did-buy the short block, or go with the 302 block I have now. The physical transportation probably would be easier with the long block from Ford--- out with the old, in with the new. |
Harris,
Sorry, I didn't quite follow your last comment. If you are saying that its easier to take a long block from Ford and add the necessary parts & $$$ is easier than pulling your 302 and stroking it you may be right to a point. However, it will be easier on your pocket book if you stroke what you got. It seems to be a matter of time.....more time to complete stroking yours will be less $$$, Less time in getting a completed engine (long block) equals more $$$. good luck, Mike 'monster' |
