Engine build question
Help engine builders. Let's assume there are 4 different engines, a 396 Chevrolet, a 392 Stroked Chevrolet Small Block, a 392 Stroked Windsor, and a 390 FE. Given the EXACT same head flow numbers, cam figures, manifolds, and carburetors, is it safe to assume that all four would make the same amount of power ? I understand there will be differences in rod length and reciprocating mass and such but that should only be +/- a few HP and Torque. I've been a small block guy for the last 20 years and I don't want to fall into that bigger is better trap that I am finding myself getting closer to. I've done all the Desk Top Dyno numbers but I would like to hear from those with practical experience. Thanks.

FR,
You are probably right about everything being equal will mean equal HP. But we all know or we all should know that the heads available to the Chevy camp far outnumber the Fords as far as choice and number of available heads. As far as the Fords go the sb has a much bigger selection of aftermarket heads. There is no way a 390 FE will ever make as much power as a 390 sb. The vast majority of serious road racers run the sb Ford in their Cobras. Cranky:3DSMILE: |
