Ignition?
 
So, I am building a 408 Stroker less than 500 hp for the cobra. Which Igniotion? MSD 6AL, 7? The Digital? Weekend driver, some drag, ....

I have the MSD 6al. I love it. It is realiable as hell and has the rev limit feature. My freind uses the same box along with the MSD distributor on his 430HP 347 stroker. Works great, never misses a beat, easy to install, looks great, easy to mess with the curve springs.
I don't have much experiance with other units, so this eval is not a comparison. Just my 2 cents.... Hope this helps you.

You may want to look at the MSD Digital 6plus. It has built in rev limiters and a 20 deg start retard. Have mine in over two years.

Ther reliability issues with MSD boxes only come into play on real race cars, where they have two in parallel and a switch to select which one, in times when one fails.. On a weekend driver it doesn't matter.

A capacitive discharge box is an ADDITION to any regular setup. Be it points, mag trigger, or what have you. The new MSD distributor is nothing new at all, it's just a mag triggered distributor with a pretty billet shaft, same as any factory unit from the 70's on, but new manufacture. The box is how you get a hotter spark.

About to buy my MSD Distributor etc, the MSD guys recommend the Digital ignition, which has a better spark, and quicker thinking due to a microcontroller, which puts me off a bit as processors can fail or get overloaded. Still think the MSD-6AL is a good stable unit that gets the job done!

Don't forget to look into the Mallory stuff. I am running a Mallory Unilight distributor, MSD Coil and the new Hyfire VI digital with built in rev limiter. The Unilight will run the car without a box and I ran it two years like that. I bought a factory rebuilt Hyfire unit from Mallory at the Gatornationals and it makes the engine idle with less unburnt fuel and rev better at high rpm.

A new Hyfire with rev limiter is about $170 which is the same as a analog MSD unit. The rev limiter is set with two switches and is adjustable in 250rpm increments from 3000 to 10000 rpm

I had the self contrained MSD Distributor in my small block and I loved it. Easy install and easy adjustments. MSD refers to it as their "READY TO RUN" unit. I never bought an ignition box, no problems. MSD either has a "READY TO RUN" unit available for the FE or will soon. Probably cost about $250.00 or less.

However, I am running the MSD FE distributor, MSD 6AL box, and their black vibration proof high output coil. I like them a lot.

aumoore, I am running Mallory fuel pump etc and I think they make good stuff, worth a look!

Something for me to consider is my engine is going to be max 10.1 comp, will be very efficient with good heads etc, but this is a 500bhp street and race engine!
Regarding MSD-6AL and Blaster 2 coil, I could leave my injected LS7 Chev 650+bhp race engine idling until warm with the coldest plugs available, go out and it never missed a beat.

Roscoe, The MSD guys recommend digital 6 plus, same as yours, with the new 8253 Blaster HVC II coil with 44000 of this and that.

SO do I need the hottest biggest spark around, as with an engine running pump gas on road, if you run big spark does this vastly reduce plug life as in wear and not really gain much horsepower over the 6AL unit?

I'm with Mr. Fixit. Mallory stuff has left me sitting in the cold before. MSD has excellent quality control. Never a problem.

Clois - is the new coil you are using oil filled or epoxy. Have heard of the Blaster 2 coils failing when mounted horizontal, account oil moving away from internals.

Someone said MSD has a new coil that can be mounted horizontally with no problem.

Lynn, I assume the coil(s) you are referring to would be the Blaster vibration coil and any of the 8252, 8253 HVC coils, as these are filled with epoxy!

If you check out the MSD stuff you will find a few failures especially the MSD ignition boxes.

From what I have been told by people that run Mallory Unilights you have to be extra careful when welding or jumping off a Unilight equiped engine. Always disconnect the ignition before welding on the car or charging the car. Never jump start a car with a Mallory Ignition. Charge the battery with the cables disconnected. The LEd in a Unilight is very sensitive to power spikes.

Many Unilights are damaged by hooking up wrong or by not using a ballast resistor. If you run a Hyfire box you do not need the ballast resistor.

I have seen many MSD failures and I would not recommend jump starting any modern electronic ignition cars.

I have ran my Mallory Unilight for over two years and many of the miles are under road race conditions. Drove the car from Pensacola to Ocala, Florida in 5 hours and back the next day. Never a hickup.

Take care of it and it will give good service. Maybe MSD has less failures because there is less of them on the road? Mallory has been around a long time and they make OEM ignitions for Boat manufactures.

Don't get me wrong MSD makes good stuff but they are not the only option out there.

Roscoe,

Thinking seriously about the digital 6 as the 6AL has been around for a long time, and if MSD claim its the way to go!

I see in an old post you went for a dual pickup distributor, do you run two separate ignition systems or is that just to have a backup pickup?
