Please help id this rear
Gents,
I know this is an 8.8 diff. My question is: 1 What year (approx) is it? 2 is this the Mustang brake setup or a truck setup? .The lenth, axle flange to axle flange is 60.5" .The axles themselves are 28 spline units that are 29 5/16" from the outside of the wheel flange to the other end. .The id tag is missing. .The rotors are 10" diameter Thanks. I do not know the year but truck rear would have spring perch for leaf springs I did not see them in your photo.

It could be from a lincoln Mark VIII...86-90ish...I am about 70% sure that they were the only ones with a 5 bolt, coil, disc brake setup.
I got my front 5 bolt discs and calipers for my conversion/setup on my FFR and noticed the rear setup at the time...thought about it but I think it was wider than the mustang rearend. |
Lincoln Mark VII had rotors that were 11.65".Thats what I have. That one looks alot different. Jim

The rear end is definatly fox chassis because of the suspension. The fact that it's 5 lug leaves mustang out unless someone changed the axles and brakes. It is not lincoln or 84-86 svo mustang because those used the larger 11" rotors and different calipers. The caliper mounting brackets don't look like the usual stamped steel that ford uses. It may have aftermarcket axles and brakes on it. I looked in my ford motorsport catalog to see if they offered something in a 10" disc conversion but could not find anything.
Good luck, Tim |

'88 T-Bird Turbo Coupe

Gents,
I just realized I left out some important info. 1. The brake calipers have the Ford script cast in them So I believe they are stock. 2. the axles are 4 lug units that someone modified to 5 lug. You can see the old lug holes in the rotor, same thing with the axles. 3. It is the 4 link Fox body configuration. Thanks for all the responses. Dirt, you seem pretty sure of your answer, after my update, do you still think it is from a turbo coupe? |
Looks like Dirt wins the prize.
I did a little looken arround on the net. Yeah, the coupe had 4lug axles with these type calipers. I also found an "E7TW" part number on the ring gear, which translates to 1987. Now I now why all the local "experts" could not get us the correct parts. This is a fairly unusual setup. Thanks to you all for the help! Steven ;) |
The calipers are thunderbird coupe, same as the 90's ones, but they were an independant rear susp. Same rear brakes as seen on early SPF's. Don't know what the housing came out of, but it looks all ford except the brake hoses.

Thanks Fixit.
All additional info on 8.8"ology is welcome. |
Do you think the LOKAR "E" brake cables are an indication that it is a modified 8.8? :)

Mr. DV. Thanks for dropping by.
The saga continues. We discovered the 5 lug bolt circle is machined off center by about 1/8" on each axle. I thought we uncovered all the booby traps this car had to offer. Yeah right! We have contracted Mr. Moser to spin us up a brandy new set of axles. I'm going to miss the cheap thrill at 63 MPH.......NOT. Steven |
Dammmm! I knew that rear axle looked familiar!
I should have known it wasn't a "typical" vibration! You should have told me the vibration had been there from the beginning! Shame on you for witholding evidence, or rather, information. :) May I presume that removing the driveshaft helped eliminate the front half of the car? DV...Waiting for June fella, waiting for June! |
Ed,
We set the car on jackstands, removed the wheels, installed the lugnuts backwards to secure the rotors, then ran her up to 140 mph in 5th gear.......smooth as glass. brought her down to arround 40 mph, looked at the studs from the rear of the car. It was easy to see the problem. Now, why the he!! didn't we suspect that problem to begin with? HA! HA! HA!. Steven PS, I'm still working on that other "Little" Cobra problem. Hopefully I will have an answer for you next week.:3DSMILE: |
Steve,
Would you call me at the shop when you get time? I need HELP with airline ticket"S"! Six of them in fact! :) I'll tell you why when you call ;) DV |
