I got a chip for my powerstroke some time ago and I am very happy with it. It did improve my gas mileage some. The power and torque have really increased. A couple of others have mentioned this, and I forgot to - about Exhaust Gas Temp (EGT).

It is absolutely imperative that you have an EGT gauge properly fitted to your turbo, and, if you have an automatic transmission, a trans temp gauge.

The only time that I have come near (yellow region) a high EGT is when I was pulling up the long grades going eastward over the Sierra Nevadas in CA (I-80). Curiously enough, the high temps were only seen in high gear (OD) at around 1700 to 1800 rpm when the grade was such that I could hold it in OD (most of the time I manually dropped out of OD when the rpm was falling through 1800. When I manually dropped it into 3rd gear (OD off), the temp dropped to a high, but acceptable reading even though the rpm was quite high (2300). On a few occasions I even had to drop into 2nd gear for some short, really steep grades (on interstates) and things ran well. I just have the standard exhaust system. They guy who did my upgrade (most of his business is with Powerstroke maintenance), doesn't feel that except for the most severe service, the exhaust upgrade is cost effective if you stay with the 60 hp upgrade.

Unfortunately, my trans temp gauge was not functioning on that trip, but I suspect an overtemp in that regard one time climbing eastward out of Albuquerque (I temporarily lost all but 1st gear. Pulled off the side of the road, didn't see anything out of the ordinary, waited for 10 minutes, then went along my way and didn't have any other problems).

Ford 6.0 PSD Turbo Advise
 

I just looked up this thread to research the need for a chip and or an exhaust modification for Fords new 6.0 PSD. The earlier threads indicate most have opted for a chip or programable upgrade. So I am wondering, on the 6.0 PSD if you modify the onboard comuputer (Chip) is it manditory to install a larger exhaust system?

I understand the exhaust gas temp will vary with the driver and driving habiits as well as any performance upgrades. But, is the original exhaust inadequate for any upgrades?

At the current time, you are limited to only chips... Superchips has not developed a 6.0 programmer (that I am aware of).

A few options are the Quadzilla 4 bank chip or the Edge box. Both claim over a 110hp gains. A DPPI exhaust, an AFE intake and an edge box on 100hp is a great start. You can expect somewhere near 450hp and 800 lb-ft of torque.

Then you move up to new injectors... propane injetion... nitrous injection... etc...


But be CAREFUL... Most of these products are unproven over the duration.
