Tach Questions

My SW Tach is also giving me trouble. On the 4 pole setting (A) it is VERY quick to respond .. seems right, only thing is it reads about 1500rpm TOO HIGH. ( I am judging by my ear, but I know that it ain't idling at 2400)....
But when I set the tach to the "B" position (3 pole)..... The Gauge seems to be reading the correct RPM (about 900-1000 at idle in Neutral),,, but when I rev,... the gauge is VERY SLOW to respond... I can punch the throttle and the motor is back to idle before the gauge peaks............ Any other setting (C or D) the gauge just goes wacky,.. So, I know these positions are not correct........ whats up with this?????
