Replacing my Toggle Switches??
Looking to "clean up" the toggle switches on my dash. They are a bit tired looking and somewhat weathered. Noticed some nice lucas toggle switches on Finish Line. I have also been looking for some lighted toggles as well.
One thing I noticed was a toggle for the light "bump" (high beam). This would work great for me cause lonestar mounted the high beam switch up under the dash (too close to use my foot when driving and too far to reach when the full harness is on). Thought would be to drill a new hole for it on the dash (on the left side next to the "under dash" light. Any experiences on the lucas toggles or specifically the toggle for the high beams??? I'm using Finish Line's Lucas toggles in my Cobra. Look "correct", work fine. Remember we're talking about Lucas Electrics (Prince of Darkness and all). The toggles are NOT industrial strength toggle switches (sealed contact, 40A contacts, etc.).
Haven't had any trouble with the switches ... but just remember what you're dealing with (Lucas) :) The toggle switches you'll find at your local auto parts store for a few bucks are plastic pieces of crud. You'd be better off with the Lucas switches. Digikey.com has some very nice toggle switches, you'll pay $10 - $35 EACH for them, but they'll last forever! Sometimes, particularly if you are an engineer with a nice business email address, you can get some really cool and expensive toggle switches by emailing the folks who make the toggle switches ... not that I've EVER done that, nope, wouldn't be proper. :) |
I thought I'd toss in my two cents on toggle switches. If you're looking for high reliability, consider either a racing supplier like Pegasus or a supplier of aircraft parts. I suppose most people set up their switches so up is on and down is off. My car is set up for racing so all switches are up when it's time to race. For example, up turns the fuel pump and Accusump on and the headlights and electric fan off. That means I can glance at the switches just before I take the track and, if they are all up, I'm ready to race.

I'm using the toggles from Pegasus with rubber covers, including headlamps/hi-beams. For the horn I am using a Moroso momentary toggle with a 1.5" toggle shaft. I cut the end off a rubber cover and slid it over the shaft..

I too am replacing my toggles, and I'm adding a push button starter button. Check Alamo Performance or Alamo Hot Rod Parts...they have good stuff. and it's local blake |

To answer your question, yes I am using the Lucas headlight dim switch you are asking about. My EM has very limited space in the foot box, as most cobras do; so I mounted the dim switch on the left side of the dash under the tach. It looks very clean and matches everything else in the car. Understand that this paticular switch is an ON/ON switch, and I didn't see anything on the Pegasus' web sight that would replace this switch. I also like the fact that the Lucas switches look very refined and to me look better in the cocpit of a car that is a driver. The switches from Pegasus belong in airplanes and race cars. Tim |

Use the Lucas switches. This way you can get the correct "on- on- on" switch for the wiper motor so they will park correctly. Wire the wipers per the finish line print. they will work as advertised, and your dash will look great. Steven |
Is the main knock on LUCAS switches that they are british??

I bought new toggle switches and aircraft red safety covers today @ alamo hot rod. I bought a push button starter too. They have lots of stuff. Alamo performance is right across the street, and they have some stuff too..check 'em out blake |
If the weather is crap tomorrow (like predicted), I will. Otherwise, will make a trip next week.
