Weatherstrip question for you folks
I see that Enzo sells it on his site. He says we need about 37 feet of the 1/2 round stuff to do a full car.
Any idea on what width is used?? I have looked at a site that lists it in 3/8" and 1/2" width stripping Wondering if I may be able to source the same stuff in Canada from an auto supplier?? Tim |
Depending on how much of a "purist" you are, I just went to the local Ace hardware store and picked up a couple of rolls of 1/2 inch wide by 3/8inch "superfirm" weatherstripping. Peel and stick backing, very innexpensive, and easy to use.

I bought my weatherstrip from J.C. Whitney and it worked great. I used # 81ZX0162P, 5/8" wide 3/8" tall for the hood and trunk and # 13ZX3229X 5/8" wide 11/16" tall for the doors. The strips come in 10' coils for $17.99 @ and are self-adhesive. If you go to the Whitney web site and do a seach for weatherstrip you will see it. 3M also makes a line of similar strips but slightly different shapes available at most auto stores.
Enzo doesn't like the self-adhesive stuff for some reason but I liked the idea of not having to mask off the paint to prevent the 3M adhesive from getting all over the place. I used this strip on my hood, doors, and trunk with no problem. Two years old now and no evidence of failure either from wear or adhesive failure. Just be sure to clean the mounting area well with wax, tar, and oil remover first to ensure a clean surface. |
I bought the Enzo stuff and it isn't available at Home Depot.I havent appied it though.

I used the weatherstrip from Finish Line as well. I roughed up the back side of it with sandpaper to make sure the adhesive held. There are other option such as half round tube available through industrial supply outlets. I'm not sure about McMaster-Carr but a place here in Ontario has both the half round tube and half round foam. The advantage to the extruded foam strip over most of the hardware store stick-ons is that the surface is sealed and water doesn't soak into the foam.
