Hypereutectic vs. Forged Pistons
I understand the "insurance" value of forged over hyper pistons, however, when people talk about the worry of piston failure, are they talking about scuffing problems, wear problems, or fracture / catastrophic failure. I'd be interested in any experience related to this concern.

I've never run an engine with hypereutectic pistons, but here's my understanding of the difference:
Hypereutectic pistons are much more brittle than forged pistons and are prone to disintegrating under severe detonation. They are harder, can be made to tighter tolerances, and cheaper than forged pistons. A reasonably well tuned, naturally-aspirated engine should never see the kind of detonation that would cause a hypereutectic piston to fail. However, in an engine running nitrous or a large supercharger or turbo, detonation is much more likely to happen. Pete |

Keith Black has a good series of tech articles explaining hypereutectic pistons. I went with them on the advice of the engine builder. I built a street BB. We used KB because of the wide variety of piston CRs. I am only running 9.94 to 1 CR. http://www.kb-silvolite.com/page02.htm |
